After Deadline: Watchdogging the stimulus spending

We’re preparing a database and some stories to help you track how the federal government is spending its nearly $800 billion economic stimulus package in the Northern San Joaquin Valley.

We’ve identified at least $181 million in grants delivered to cities, counties, nonprofits and school districts by Oct. 1 between Escalon in the north and Merced in the south. That’s a welcome injection of cash for local governments who say they’d be scrapping road projects and laying off police officers without the federal money.

We obtained our data from Recovery.gov, which is a pretty remarkable site in terms of government transparency. It’s all there.

Second Autopsy Report Says Craid Prescott Not Killed By heart or Tazer But by asphixiation

Turlock Community Scores with Stadium Redevelopment

The collaborative effort between the Turlock City Council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency, and the Turlock Unified School District to renovate Joe Debely Stadium is a visionary project, a project which will provide an opportunity for two public agencies to work together for the benefit of our entire community in a number of ways which neither agency could currently achieve alone.

The proposed project will rebuild the woefully inadequate stadium that serves both of Turlock's high schools' student bodies and the whole community. One benefit of turfing the field and installing an all-weather track will be increased usability and availability of the stadium venue to better serve both Turlock high schools and the city's residents. The new track and turfed field stadium can accommodate numerous important community events, such as the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life.

After Deadline: Going Rogue

I’ve got rogue fever this morning. It’s such a fun word, filled with images of Hunter Thompson, Axl Rose and now Sarah Palin.

Walk with me here.

The Modesto City Council wants to bring out the rogue in Auditor Frank DeMattos.

You might think that Modesto Parks Director Julie Hannon went rogue when you read the headline on page B-1 today: “Official urges golfers to get teed off.” Sources assure us she’s fine, though.

Al Nava ran the independent rogue route while campaigning for a Modesto City Council seat, but it didn’t work so well.

Cindy Marks and Nancy Cline, however, went rogue on Modesto City Schools Superintendent Arturo Flores and that helped get them re-elected to the district’s board of education.

After Deadline: More fallout from Assemblyman's contributions to county GOP committees

The treasurer of the Placer County Republican Central Committee last week resigned because of controversy over contributions the group accepted from a Southern California assemblyman, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The Placer committee was one of three in the valley that accepted big donations from Assemblyman Joel Anderson only to return them to a committee he controls for a possible run at a State Senate seat. The state Fair Political Practices Commission is investigating those transactions.

Stanislaus County's Republican Central Committee also took money from Anderson only to give it back to him a day later. No one from the Stanislaus committee is willing to explain that exchange to The Bee so far.

Where are all the human rights activists ??

Page A-11 the Modesto Bee 11/18/09

Very small story about the protesters that were protesting the corrupt presidential election earlier this year in Iran.

They had a mass trial and the leaders of the unrest followers that disputed this presidential election were found guilty and you guessed it--- they got the death sentences.

Why didn’t our leaders stand up and protest the lack of freedom in Iran??

These protesters were no different than our tea party or the war protesters here in America.

And we hear nothing from Mr. Obama, if he wants to be just like Mr. Carter, he should be preaching for human rights all over the world.

I just can’t see how anyone could stand by and let this abuse of human rights continue.

Does anyone else care??

God Bless America

NY Times Raided

NEW YORK, Nov. 17, 2009 AP: NYC Papers' Circulation Offices Raided

Investigators in New York City raided circulation offices at some of the nation's largest newspapers Tuesday as part of a union corruption probe, a law enforcement official said.

Police officers working with the Manhattan district attorney's office searched circulation offices of The New York Times in Queens, the New York Post and the Daily News in Manhattan, and El Diario in Brooklyn, the official said, speaking to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Investigators were seeking paperwork related to the Newspaper and Mail Deliverers Union, which packages and delivers newspapers across the region.

Calls to the union's headquarters were not answered Tuesday. The news deliverers' parent union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, referred inquiries to the local union.
