Ask the Vet: Summertime!
Dear Scout,
There are lots of things going on in our yard—the snails are coming out, the mosquitoes are starting to show up, the fountain is turning green, and the crab grass and Johnson grass are starting to spread like crazy.
The problem is, we like to drink out of the fountain, and sometimes we chew on the grass. What are the safest ways Pop can deal with this without harming dogs like us? How can he tell which products are safe?
Thank you!

Dear Buster and BeBe,
For a couple of dogs, you raise some good questions. Please give “Pop” the following information:
Most fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides used on the lawn are safe if used appropriately (apply per label directions, keep pets off the lawn until the product dries, and curtail grazing). When in doubt, “Pop” should check with the manufacturer before using the product, and store the product in a pet-inaccessible area.
Some insecticides used for garden care are VERY dangerous. These include disyston or disulfaton systemic organophosphates (used for rose care) and metaldehyde snail baits. Arsenic compounds that are used to kill crabgrass should also be avoided. Some of the “safe” snail bait products that contain iron phosphate are safe, but can cause problems if large quantities are ingested.
Also some people may have stockpiles of old garden products that could be dangerous. Make sure to only use products that can be found in stores today, or check with the manufacturer before use.
In regards to the question about algae in the water, algae may have some health benefits, but the specifics are not quantified. There is no harm caused by green algae. However, blue-green algae in full bloom can kill people, birds, and animals, but this is not what is growing in “Pop’s” fountain.
I hope this helps you have a safe summer!
