I've experienced through civil war  and the drug war in two countries, as well as the racial strife from the 60's on in the Bay Area and L.A., the wanton destruction and tragedy that comes from explosions of violence, be they race-, religious-, or cartel/government-based.

If what your agenda is is to punish whitey as a whole, you punish yourself by alienating those human beings of European ancestry who see the injustice going on and are working to bring about change. There are teachers, attorneys, planners, sectors of the business community, even individuals within law enforcement, who are quietly working for social justice and equality for all of us, realizing that to discriminate against another based on whatever the criteria might be is to diminish one's own humanity.

The L.A. riots hurt the black community deeply, by driving away many businesses and services that members of all communities need, forcing those with no form of transportation to travel farther, spend more getting there, and wasting valuable time doing so. Turn someone into a color, a creed, or whatever other dividing line you want to fill the blank in with, and you merely reinforce the stereotypes that those who don't spend time with those of other cultures, races, religions, etc. have regarding black folk. You may not care, but if not, and I do understand the frustration, because I experience it myself, having been been violently attacked on many occasions in my youth, and much less frequently in my adulthood, for the color of skin, burning it down is just going to make the divide wider and create a chasm of distrust and hate which will prevent the healing process from strengthening sooner than it could have.

I have deep admiration for Malcolm X, because he was a man who, when all was said and done, in spite of having experienced and lived the worst of what the racialized society of his time had to offer, and the years spent processing his anger at the injustices experienced by black Americans during his time as spokesman for Elijah Muhammad's Nation of Islam, after going on the Haj, the pilgrimage to Mecca which is every Muslim's duty to fulfill if financially possible, he saw the truth of the humanity of us all. It's all right there in The Autobiography of Malcolm X. He realized that it's not the color, it's the individual.

Do I believe there will be rioting in the streets of Oakland in the wake of a verdict favorable to Mehserle? Yes. Do I understand that it's part of the dynamic of the poverty of mind and spirit we experience, in addition to the grinding economic poverty so many of our black brethren are born into, grow up in, and pass on in, which results in the anger and frustration such as that which you and the fellow on the video links you provided feel? Yes. Will the rioting accomplish anything other than destruction and furthering the division and distrust between those of different cultures and races. I sincerely doubt it.

Some people will get their yay-ya's out, but it sure won't make Oaktown a better place to live.

In the 2006 film by the Haitian actor/director Jimmy Jean-Louis, Diary of a Tired Black Man, Mr. Jean-Louis cites an extremely tragic and disturbing statistic: 9 out 10 African-American children are raised in homes where either one or both of the biological parents are absent, with the vast majority of those absent parents being fathers. 9 out 10? WTF! No wonder there's so much pain, in addition to all the other negative forces pushing in on people.

I hope justice will be served, but it's all ready all bad. I've got news for you; most white folk think this was terrible tragedy all the way around, too.

I think it reflects on the absurdity and tragedy of the human condition. Anger and violence are the natural result of poverty and despair. While there has indeed been progress in some realms of human existence, you're quite right in that in many ways, in spite of the positive changes, we haven't come very far at all, and in this new information age, with so much of the information available being based on distortions and hate-based rhetoric, we're taking steps backward.

People I know in the Oakland/East Bay Area, which was affected by the initial riots, will be staying home and keeping an eye on what develops. People of all races are concerned that destructive forces will, once again, hijack any peaceful demonstrations that might occur.

The young African-American man who organized the original demonstrations against the shooting, which were supposed to be peaceful and devolved into violence and destruction of businesses and property in the downtown Oakland area, cried in frustration after seeing his vision of a mass demonstration of peaceful civil disobedience get hijacked by violent individuals who really didn't see the demonstrations as anything other than an opportunity to wreak havoc without suffering consequences. It had nothing to do with police accountability or Oscar Grant's death.

I guess all we can do is quietly treat others with respect no matter what the differences are between us, be they religious, racial, cultural, or whatever else it might be, and work for peace by seeing the common humanity we share.

Lest it be forgotten, this same hero to some was conclusively linked by DNA analysis to the rape of a 12 year old girl that occurred on February 5th of 2009, and identified him as the man who raped and robbed two women on the morning of March 21st, 2009, the same day he shot two Oakland police officers to death after a traffic stop and killed two more officers who were members of Oakland P.D.'s SWAT team in the shootout that ensued when they entered his sister's apartment after being told by a woman familiar with the case that he was located there. The lab, connected to OPD according to reports, had its findings called into question by some members of the black community.

Another perspective from some members of Mixon's family and a gathering of ministers that took place on March 31 - Several hundred people gathered in the early evening at an event organized by Pastors of Oakland, which is composed mainly of black ministers. Caroline Mixon, cousin of Lovelle Mixon, publicly praised the Oakland Police Department for serving and protecting the people of Oakland. Reverend Doug Stevens exhorted those gathered to live as if they were already in heaven, "without regard to color or class".

There are no monoliths when it comes to race groups in the U.S.. There is a broad range of diversity within each group, and though it might be tempting, even irresistable to some, to vilify and demonize people according to the cut of their birthday suits, as opposed to their thoughts and actions, it defies logic and reality.

They were all witnesses to the destruction and alienation caused by the riots that followed the Rodney King verdict. The black gents, both of whom remained in their communities throughout the years because of family ties and the pride of ownership that comes with owning and occupying one's own house, as well their financial support of members of the next generation who devoted themselves to getting degrees and vocational certificates, shared that the destruction of the Watts riots and the later King riots left their community without essential services, and caused businesses to rethink their plans to invest in the community, which wound up denying access of valuable services and actually caused the prices of staples to rise, because the only markets left were the corner stores and liquor stores the Koreans, Palestinians and Yemenis reopened, the majority of which charge significantly higher prices for foodstuffs and household necessities like cleaning materials and detergents. No insurance for them, because of the enormous losses incurred by the insurance companies in those areas.

Not only did this hurt the black community in terms of increased prices for staples, but also affected the health of the community, in that these stores almost never offer fresh fruit and vegetables, just the usual fare of high-fat, preservative-laced junk foods and the least nutritious breads and high-sugar cereals.

While the Nation of Islam may not like me much because I'm a HMF, and not only do I have serious differences with much of their philosophy, but other Muslims do too, I have to say that I admire their philosophy of promoting entrepeneurship in the black community, and urging members of the community to patronize black-owned businesses. Until there is greater parity, this is one peaceful, healthy way to truly empower the community, by creating jobs and wealth that are generated by the community and elevate the standard of living and education in the community.

Fisrt off I'd like to admit my bias- When I hear of an officer-involved shooting I tend to lean towards the side of the officer. Right or wrong it is what it is.

The verdict of the jury most certainly centered around the issue of intent.  A conviction for murder requires not only intent but also malice. The use of a deadly weapon such as a firearm is presumable intent and a police officer needs to justify use of deadly force. 

Clearly from the video the use of deadly force was not necessary.

So the BART officer's use of the "taser mishap" in his defence was genius. Involuntary manslaughter carries the lowest prison terms of all unlawful killings in our justice system and would only require the prosecuter to prove criminal negligence.

I have some questions though:

Are taser's fired at close range? Point blank range? Particularly Oakland Police Officer's taser's?

If the answer to these questions is yes I believe the verdict is appropriate.

If the answer to these questions is no I believe a major injustice has occurred.

I find it curious that in over 1 and 1/2 years since the shooting occured, it was only recently we have heard the officer claim to have made a mistake with his taser gun.

My understanding is that taser's were fired from a distance. Am I wrong?

Sounds a lot like de facto to me.

I am a protester against what I believe to be mismanagement or corruption in our governments. I am an advocate for the ethical treatment of the mentally ill, and against racism,discrimination in all forms.
