After Deadline: All eyes on Berryhill for Cogdill's seat
Elected leaders in Stanislaus County who might make a run for Dave Cogdill's State Senate seat are watching to see whether Republican Assemblyman Tom Berryhill enters the race.
Don't expect an announcement until somewhere into December or January.
Berryhill lives about a mile outside of Cogdill's district, which goes all the way down to Fresno County. He'd have to move to run.
Berryhill in theory could see his time in Sacramento end in 2012 if he doesn't go for the senate seat. He terms out from his Assembly chair that year, and by then the GOP presumably would have a different politician representing Cogdill's right-leaning district.
Berryhill lives in Republican State Sen. Jeff Denham's district and supports Ceres Mayor Anthony Cannella's 2010 run for that seat.
All that means Cogdill's decision not to run for re-election could represent Berryhill's best opportunity to keep his voice in Sacramento.
Cogdill, meanwhile, this week gave his most explicit declaration that he'd take an offer to fill in as lieutenant governor for the next year. He's believed to be on the short list of candidates Gov. Schwarzenegger might name to the position now that John Garamendi has moved on to Congress.
"That would be a huge honor and something, quite frankly, that I would be very interested in. It would be another aspect of governing at the state level that I have not experienced," Cogdill told mymotherlode.com.

We already have a good Conservative Candidate in the District 14 Senate race! Her name is HEIDI FULLER and she is a real Conservative, not one of these RINOS that we are all tried of! I have listened to her speak at a few tea parties, Conservative meet ups and on the local talk radio shows. I like her and I will be voting for her, I for one am tired of these polished politicians that say one thing and do another, NO MORE! I hope Berryhill doen't play this game of moving for a few weeks to decive the voters, that would make him just another crooked politician in my veiw, I would suddenly be ashamed of my vote for him! I like Tom's voting record and he should stay right were he is and support this up and coming Conservative star Heidi Fuller!
