After Deadline: Going Rogue

I’ve got rogue fever this morning. It’s such a fun word, filled with images of Hunter Thompson, Axl Rose and now Sarah Palin.

Walk with me here.

The Modesto City Council wants to bring out the rogue in Auditor Frank DeMattos.

You might think that Modesto Parks Director Julie Hannon went rogue when you read the headline on page B-1 today: “Official urges golfers to get teed off.” Sources assure us she’s fine, though.

Al Nava ran the independent rogue route while campaigning for a Modesto City Council seat, but it didn’t work so well.

Cindy Marks and Nancy Cline, however, went rogue on Modesto City Schools Superintendent Arturo Flores and that helped get them re-elected to the district’s board of education.

Rogue is as rogue does.

Look what the city council has instructed the man to do?

"We had in mind someone who would go down and check on why only five water meters are installed a day instead of 10 water meters, and look at (whether there are) efficiencies that could save taxpayer dollars," Councilwoman Janice Keating said.

Fair enough

There are high expectations for DeMattos because the creation of his position was the most popular aspect of Measure M, the government accountability measure that Mayor Ridenour campaigned for, which is why we wrote about him last week. I don't know where to balance those expectations against the challenge of starting an audit shop from scratch.

$96,000 dollars to learn the ropes...?

We can't afford much more of that.   Quick, somebody show him what a rope is.

That or the door.

I spoke with him at length not too long ago...

I believe that the council will be impressed with his upcoming report.

He has found many things that have been overlooked for many years and is bringing these to light. For instance business license fees have remained unchanged for years. And that is just one item.

Like I said, I believe that his report will really show where his true value is. It's not like he has been doing nothing this whole time.
