Jardine: All that just for another white guy......PLAYING THE RACE CARD !

Jardine: All that just for another white guy - Modesto's first district elections were a major letdown in one respect: Fewer than 800 people voted in District 2, which includes 34,000 people and more than 9,000 registered voters. [Local Modesto News]

THE MODESTO COUNCIL RACE WAS BASED UPON RACES

What was the purpose of this story, if not to expose the racism that still exist in Modesto. THANK YOU !for exposing the corruption.

District elections had a lot to do with prejudice which still exists, South & West Modesto has most of it.

Why not concentrate on how to build bridges and eliminate these prejudices instead of taking pot shots at the voters?

The voters did not turn out because they are sick and tired of the same old thing during each election ; the Modesto Bee favors certain candidates then runs down the other candidates.......it's called culling !

; Separating what they deem as bad fruit from the good fruit in their eyes, I know there is a law against this, so for now all I can say it is unethical for a newspaper to bash only certain candidates, why not support all the candidates? And let the voters speak for themselves.

Hey! Joe how about coming back on the HIVE and explain this ?

No of course not he was just hoping for a couple of votes, but does not want to be mixed up with the hive members..........HE IS A SHILL !

protest this election. call the FPPC.

PROTEST,PROTEST, PROTEST !

THIS BLOG OR COMMENT WAS WRITTEN BY WAYNE2008 WHO IS A PROTESTER AGAINST WHAT  HE BELIEVES IS MISMANAGEMENT OR CORRUPTION IN OUR LOCAL GOVERNMENTS. WAYNE IS ALSO AN ADVOCATE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF THE MENTALLY ILL, AND IS AGAINST RACISM IN ALL FORMS.

I'm not so sure the voters didn't turn out because of the same ol' same ol'. I think it has more to do with the lack of outreach on the part of both candidates (Nava and Geer), the lack of good candidates, the lack of a major issue in District 2, the history of District 2 just not voting at all versus areas like La Loma, which is much more involved and vested in its community. When you don't take pride in your part of town with community partnerships, neighborhood activities, and things like La Loma Neighborhood Association, the chances of enhanced voter turnout fizzle. Plus, I believe there's somewhat of a relationship between voter turnout and socioeconomic status and educational attainment. Areas where people are highly educated and are in upper echelon of income brackets tend to vote more. They tend to follow the news much more carefully. I think a lot of it had to do with Al Nava not being a better candidate. He got 44% of the cast votes. Think about it, Wayne - if he would have conducted himself with more class, bingo! He would have been elected. As such, Nava exemplified the intelligence and temperament of a 6-year-old.

Wayne-another perspective here

Wayne, read this entry from Guerito, who posted a comment under Jardine's column:

This just may have nothing to do woth race at all. People I spoke to when I lived there and now in the community I'm residing in say that the lack of unity in the Mexican and Mexican-American communities is a major factor in the lack of participation in elections and community organizations. This is especially prevalent among those who have had any experience with the thoroughly corrupted system in place in Mexico, where if you're seen as honest, forthright and self-sacrificing, you're not a man, you're a mark. Participation is seen as fruitless unless you have a personal patron who will throw benefits your way. This process will take time. It's too bad the opportunity was spurned. I don't know Geer or of Geer, but being a 67 year old Anglo doesn't preclude him from representing the district well on those basis alone. But remember District 2, if you don't like what's comin' down the pike, you've only got yourselves to blame.

GUERITO ....spouts off everyday

So what !

This was supposed to be the latino's chance to rise above the supression of racism and bigotry, ...AGAIN WHO DREW UP THE MAP?

Look I don't know if your white, black, latino or ITALIAN !

but you seem to be glossing over the facts to make your case.

QUESTION: ARE YOU JOE MURATORE ?

Just come out as the real person and stop hiding behind a screen name and answer the questions....this cover-up stuff ain't working.

Why would they be motivated to vote

When pickins is slim, why would they come out and vote? Also, Jardine's trying to be cute is offensive "All that just for another white guy".  Who apporoves his articles? I used to like reading his peices, but over the past year they seem to be lacking.  Maybe he just needs a vacation.

I agree...wilderj...I have been offended more times than not by

his writings.

I believe has personal jabs should be left on the opinion page.

But..."All that just for another white guy"....very poor taste in my mind!

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt

Re: Jardine's Article

In my opinion, Jeff Jardine's article had nothing to do with personal jabs, trying to be cute, or racism.

The way I read his article, what he is basically saying that after all of the issues focused around the lawsuit (City spending $3 Million in defense, racial equality, latino representation on the City Council, etc.), it resulted in approximately 800 people in District 2 casting their vote, and a Caucasian being elected.  Irony.  His article is about irony.

How you can read the article and see personal jabs or worse yet, racism, is beyond me.

Irony?

If any other person had said "just another white guy", we would have been called racist or playing the race card. But because he is from the BEE it is called "irony."  And over 1,100 people voted in District 2.

Jardine column

burnsgracie: Jeff Jardine is a columnist. It's his job to express opinion. His column runs in the Local News section and occasionally A-1.

Dan

I was more concerned about Jardine's Joe Cataline article

where he took a last minute cheap shot(1+1/2 weeks before the election) when Joe's photography business was well known. Someone helped manipulate public opinion then.

After reading his second Prescott family article and noticing that the family didn't give him any quotes, I had to wonder if it was because of the sense of humor he displayed during his first interview with the family.

Opinion Vs. News

We need to be aware of the difference between an Opinion piece and a news story.  Jardine is a columnist and gives his own opinion.  It's something the White house doesn't understand when it accuses Fox News of being an arm of the Republican party.  Glen Beck and Sean Hannity are Opinion shows on the Fox News Channel.  They are not presenting the news, they are an opinion show.    Yet, Obama Hussien and his administration want to censor Fox News because of the opinions of the two.

I thought Jardine's column...

I thought Jardine's column was insightful and right on the money.  Attorney's from the Bay Area representing minorities, mostly Mexicans in Modesto, sued the City of Modesto for $3,000,000 and won because we didn't have district elections which would have better represented districts with a majority of minority voters.  So now we have our first district elections for City Council seats, and the Mexican minoriteies who are in the majority in that district didn't come out and vote (22% turnout).  So what happened, probably the real minorities in that district (White People) came out and voted and they voted for the white guy over the Mexican guy.  So really, the Mexican people in that district that screamed and shouted (when prodded by minority groups and Bay Area Attorney's) about how unfair it was that their wasn't district elections, never came out and voted anyway.  They are just a bunch of screamers and yellers and basically made 3 attorney's from the Bay Area rich men.  They want to scream and yell how unfair life is because they are not represented, but then when the oppurtunity arises they don't come and out and represent themselves.  What a bunch of crap.  This is how I interpreted Jardine's column.

Mexicans as RACISTS

The way I see it, Mexican are more racist than white people yet they scream discrimination all the time at white people.  Case in point...  Southern Mexicans hate Northern Mexicans.  Most mexicans I know hate white people.  Like it or not.  That's my opinion.  I am white and have been discriminated against by Mexicans several times.

attributes like bigotry...

are human in nature. To attribute them to specific races is, in and of itself, racist. Face it... people suck.

AE's 2010 Calendar

Now about that #3 Million dollars allen0

That went to pay the attorney fees of those who won.  Why Modesto fought district elections isn't an easy answer.

But about the recent election and the 2nd district. As memory serves it's only about 50% Lation so I wouldn't say that any race come off as being very interested in these candidates when only 10% of the eligible voters cast a ballot.

And I say theis with a chuckle...Ae is right in his analysis...people do suck...:)

Editors_Desk....thank you for the reminder.

However, I still feel that his opinions should remain on the opinion page.

How many tmes have we seen him "express" his opinion on Mr. Serpa?

I am begining to wish Puthuff had said something less "Disney" about Christianson and Weidman.

If he is going to continue to be the poster child for sour grapes...it is too bad he didn't call them both backstabbing....etc.

Thank you again for your response

I get it.

I got the point. Splitting into districts was done to better represent those that live in the specific districts, yet in this high Latino district they are going to be represented by a Caucasian. The way he worded "All that just for another white guy" was in poor taste, what if he was to say; black, brown, or yellow.  If I were Latino I would be offended to his insult at my intelligence. If I were that white guy I would be offended as well.  Yes he is a columnist, and it is his opinion, but let's get real, how many of our opinions have offended someone on the hive? Does it make it right or okay?

You cannot legislate public involvement

Like TS, I think fighting the district election idea was a bad idea. It did cost us tons of money that we need for other things.

I also think we need, as a community, to recognize that we can make avenues available to people and we can offer education as to how to USE those avenues, but unless we are going to march people at gun point to the polls we cannot MAKE people vote.

I agree LSK49rs.

I felt the low turnout in these districts were a true sign of how much they need help to become a part of the community as a whole.

I am hoping the people from these districts will learn that they are no longer forgotten....that they do have representation.

People who are fighting just to survive their environment...I can see them not really thinking or believing that their votes can make a difference for them at a personal level.
