Despite Adam Christianson's Self-serving Comments, The Sheriff's Office is Showing Divisions

In the shadow of Tuesday's fast- approaching ballot, it's tempting to lose sight of June's election for Stanislaus County sheriff, despite recent developments that could play into campaigns.
Whether those moves prove significant might not become clear for months, some political watchers suggest.
On Monday, a newly formed deputies' union snubbed its boss, Sheriff Adam Christianson, by endorsing challenger Rob Jackson, a Turlock police captain.
The next day, county leaders settled a potentially explosive discrimination lawsuit brought by three of Christianson's female employees.
Both generated media attention, while a federal judge's order in another case, also Monday, flew under the radar. That judge dismissed Christianson personally from discrimination and wrongful firing complaints in a nasty lawsuit brought by another woman while allowing it to go forward with sexual harassment claims against one of his sergeants, as well as two due-process complaints against the sheriff.
The county's lawyer acknowledged the "political implications" of Tuesday's settlement, but said politics did not influence his team's negotiating. Christianson refused to discuss the lawsuits, while Jackson decried "seven figures' worth of expenses to the county."
Meanwhile, the endorsement evoked memories of a bruising campaign that divided the Sheriff's Department four years ago. But political commentators say it's probably not as important to voters, who might not even remember come June.
"These things are never determinative. But they are all contributory," said University of the Pacific political studies professor Bob Benedetti, speaking generically about the many moving pieces of any campaign.
Leadership scrutinized in campaigns
Accountability of leaders often surfaces in campaign warfare.
One need look no further than the last sheriff's race, when Christianson took on unelected Assistant Sheriff Mark Puthuff, heir apparent to former Sheriff Les Weidman, in the first true campaign for that post since 1990.
In the last week of October -- sound familiar? -- four years ago, The Bee broke news of a disgruntled former deputy suing the department and Puthuff, with allegations of an affair. Puthuff and his attorney questioned the timing, at the beginning of campaign season.
Christianson, then a lieutenant, also was second-guessed about his role in a controversy over 15 deputies posing with a helicopter in a private catalog photo shoot. And both candidates confronted prickly questions about their public and private lives.
In July 2008, Christianson initially was accused of calling two female employees "bitches" when four records clerks sued him and the county. But a month ago, a judge released Christianson from the lawsuit, and attorneys settled the rest out of court Tuesday.
The deal cancels a trial scheduled to start this week pitting Christianson's office against remaining defendants Jackie Bernal, Charmaine Morad-Daniel and Marlena Younan. County leaders agreed to pay the three a combined $545,000, without admitting wrongdoing. The county has spent about $310,000 more on its legal fees, plus more dealing with two other discrimination lawsuits brought by former female employees of the department.
"To settle like that, there had to be some wrongdoing," said Jackson, who worked nearly 20 years for the Sheriff's Department and was chief of police for Waterford, whose unit is staffed by deputies, before he left for Turlock in November 2007. "That tells me there was some level of culpability. What's troubling to me is spending that money at a time when the sheriff's office is so fiscally strapped."

And we saw how professional the jailers were, with the pictures and claims they made after the last lawsuit.
When the Sheriff's delay campaign was exposed
and his use of taxpayer money in an attempt to postpone the possible trial, it is believed he actually requested county council to settle. Even the article's expert says the Sheriff had more of an upside with his claims of wanting to fight it out.
The insurance policy carried by the County doesn't cover the County's legal fees, only the settlement cost.

yeah, it looks like k9 deputies did vote for AC. i guess that means they got two seperate votes. they voted with the rest of their union. then when they didnt like the outcome they did their own vote... not only did they cheat the system in a way, the k9 endorsement is actually illegal. in order to give an endorsement they have to form an association... they have done that, however they are a non-profit association. per the IRS tax code, non-profits can not take any political stand, can not contribute money to a campaign and can not endorse any candidate in an election. if the irs finds out what they have done, not only will they lose their tax exemption and be forced to pay taxes again, they will also be strapped with some very hefty fines. good luck puppy club, hope no one tells on you.

The investigator found Christianson had not told the truth about ordering deputies to appear for the shoot.
He made that very clear in the Bee.
He had seen the memo....Christianson did not ask for volunteers.
I really don't think the one disgruntled employee naming Puthuff can really be compared to these current lawsuits against the SO.

know nothing about the lawsuits!! The women who settled out with the county need to be sued by the women at the department they harrased!! The county executives are rediculous for settling it with those women.. They caused nightmares for all the other women that they were managing..

The way they did the vote for the union was a joke! They did not give a dead line on when the votes were to be in and due the dead line not being told votes were missed.. They should of not backed anyone..

and I believe the swat team does double duty and would have been included in the original post.

Previous Christianson supporters are some of the most vocal Jackson supporters I know.
They are sick about their mistake and want to correct the wrong.

That is precisely why change is needed. There is too much truth to what has been said in these post. Anytime you are willing to lie to cover up the truth, there is a need to come back to the reality of what our jobs as civil servants is all about. I swore an oath, to protect the citizens that I serve, not to self serve, how about you? To tell citizens that are suffering a terrible hurt and pain that their love one is just unconscious, and not brain dead, is a bare face lie, but it is the lies that Adams Detectives told to Craig Prescotts wife and mother. These are the folks that work directly under Adam. I don't blame them completely, but I do disagree with their tactics as I disagree with Adam. Are we to be a people with no regard to being honest, approachable, and forthcoming with due regard for the citizens that we serve, or is be misleading, untrustworthy and deceptive an accepted behavior?

This is exactly what Adam is, IMHO (misleading, untrustworthy, deceptive). During the election in 2006, before Adam made public that he was running, he actually told Mark Puthuff he supported him and would campaign for him. He actually showed up at private campaign meetings to listen, gather information and give input. Mark trusted him. Then he made a back door endorsement deal with Les Weidman the egomaniac who just got kicked out of Sacramanto by Arnold and who's recommendations for promotions, etc... (or who not to promote... Raul De Leon & Doug Leo) fell on Mark's deaf ears, turned around and ran against Mark. This was decptive, untrusting and misleading.
THAT'S OUR SHERIFF FOLKS. THE ONE WE ARE SUPPOSED TO TRUST.

There are many of us who are aware of how Adam backstabbed Mark.
One other item of information on the subject....concerns Raul DeLeon.
Raul DeLeon informs Mark Puthuff that he will not be running for Sheriff and almost immediately Christianson smells opportunity and soon he and Weidman are thick as thieves.
Adam was willing to align himself with Puthuff to go against Raul...but backstabbed Mark as soon as he could.
I have heard many reason's for the Christianson/Weidman bond.
That will be good to discuss again.
