Fall Decorating Tips From At Home

When I was 6, my dad, who was a wholesale furniture representative, explained to me that the “cabriole” leg on our kitchen dinette was French for “goat leg” and that in the ancient age, people used the dead animals’ legs for chair legs and stretched animal stomachs across the legs for seats.  Dad loved the furniture industry and its rich history.  His life in furniture began when he was 12 in 1927. He quit school to sweep the floors of the Colorado Bedding Company and help pay the family bills. Now, his legacy includes 29 other family members involved in furniture.  So, when my daughter, Pam, and I retired from teaching and opened a furniture store, we felt right AT HOME.

Right now, we are enjoying our store and the fall season.  Many customers are concerned about getting their homes ready for the dark and cold and busy family times ahead.  

THREE MUSTS ARE:

LAMPS People tell me that their overhead light will do but it is NOT warm and warmth is what we want now.  Get at least two or three lamps in a room.  Floor lamps create ambiance but you need table lamps to read.  A room needs light at three levels, high, in the middle and low too.

A COLORFUL THROW (fall maple leaf red is perfect)  Have only one, though.  Otherwise the room will look like the bedroom.

SOMETHING NATURAL Bring in some long stems with withering leaves for a tall vase or some brightly colored apples in a big bowl.  Buy some bulk nuts at the store and place them in a glass bowl or how about some popcorn in the bottom of a vase with a candle?

It’s a wonderful time to enjoy your home and reflect on your family history.  If you have a cabriole leg there somewhere, be sure you tell the kids about the poor goats. Wishing you a happy, fun, warm and healthful (no flu) fall!
