Editors Desk: Service restored on The Hive

Editors_Desk's picture

[UPDATE: The denial of service attack against McClatchy servers continues. Be aware that although we think we have The Hive in the clear, there still could be sporadic outages.]

We believe service has largely been restored on The Hive.

Many of you have been able to post over the past two days, but others - myself included - have been stymied.

The problems erupted Wednesday, when McClatchy Co. Web sites became the target of a malicious "denial of service" attack. In layman's term, it means thousands of barbarians are scaling the castle walls. To fight the attack, our corporate Internet team engaged in various counter maneuvers, one or some of which apparently affected The Hive.

I tried a number of times to post a note on The Hive saying we were aware of the problem and searching for a solution, but each time my posts were stymied.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and hope the problem is behind us.

Dan

Thanks so much Dan for fixing the problem

It's so nice to be able to post again.   I wasn't able to get through for the whole two days.  Even when Wayne posted a blog asking if any of us were having problems, SORRY WAYNE I wanted so much to let you know I was experiencing the same thing you were, but couldn't get a post through!!

Dan, I appreciate the hard work you put in to solve this!!

AE...

Yeah... you are correct... it just would not be you if you waited until a comment was necessary... LOL...  that's another thing we agree on.  It's the weekend, now let's get out there and go do some shooting (photos that is)....

Dan,

Does anyone there know why groups engage in denial of service attacks?  Was this some sort of political protest, financial attack or just bored kids?  I never understood the reason for these types of things.

Same with the spam, does anyone benefit from those posts?  Seems like a big irritant to me.
