Editors Desk: Polite behavior on the roads

Some bad drivers may occasionally get our dander up on the streets of Modesto and Stanislaus County, but I was struck this morning on my way into work how generally polite drivers are in these parts.
Anyone trying to access downtown Modesto from the east these past few weeks has encountered the construction where Scenic Drive turns into H Street. Because H is all torn up, westbound traffic is diverted onto Downey Avenue.
This morning, there was a long line of cars in the right lane of Scenic approaching Downey. Everyone seemed to know that the big squeeze was ahead, and they dutifully got into line on the right and waited their turn to merge onto Downey.
Presented with this type of forced merger, most drivers in Eastern states like New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania would zoom up the left lane and cut into traffic just before the merge.
It's nice to know that it's not that way in our town.

Most of the time Dan
people are very courteous when driving. When drivers give themselves enough time to get to where they need to be, when they don't bring their anger on the road with them, when they "do unto others...." and when they are not distracted ... most people understand there will be delays (north McHenry will be a place for people to keep all these things in mind over the coming months) they respond appropriately.
It's not just the drivers in the Eastern states who are impatient. Just yesterday I was trying to assist my wife out of our driveway onto our busy street (someone had partially blocked our driveway so she could not see on coming traffic)... I saw there was about a block where there were no cars coming, so I motioned for my wife to back out. About the time she got 3/4 of the way out, a driver going about 50 (closer to 60) in our 35 mile zone changed from the center lane to the curb lane - forcing my wife to pull back into the drive way rather than get hit. I caught the eye of the person driving.... yes, cell phoneitis.... Totally oblivious to others on the road.
But that was one out of thousands. What I'm trying to say here Dan is...
PEOPLE... PUT DOWN THE DISTRACTIONS, TURN DOWN THE NOISE, PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SOUROUNDINGS and GIVE THE OTHER PERSON A BREAK.... it will come back to you in kind.
Great advice Dan
Courteousness does come back in kind.
Most people are very good people too.
