Silver & Black Blog: From bad to worse to ...

I thought about just not writing at all, figuring if the Raiders didn't show up, why do I?

In their 44-7 loss to the New York Giants, the Raiders weren't competitive. Their starting quarterback fumbled three times and didn't complete a pass to a wide receiver. The opposing quarterback was resting comfortably in the second quarter, having been taken out of the game with his team in control leading 28-7.

At this time of peril, I'm reminded of one of my favorite movies, "Wall Street," where Lou looks at the crestfallen Buddy after his arrest for insider trading and says:

"A man looks in the abyss, there is nothing staring back at him. At that moment he discovers his character. That keeps the man out of the abyss."

The only problem with the Raiders is they have no character.

Their coach could be charged any day with assault.

Their $60 million quarterback, the one on the sideline between fumbles showcasing his skull cap and diamond earings, now may have lied to the media after reportedly backtracking about not being fined this season for being overweight or missing meetings.

Their defense has not a single player that can, or wants, to step up. (although, who can blame them after being pressed into service every four plays).

The owner/GM/scouting guru is out of touch with the world.

Someone reminded me after the loss to Houston last week that the Raiders were not expected to be in the playoffs anyway, and they're basically playing all their kids as part of a rebuilding season.

Only problem with that mentality, while probably partially true, is they aren't even competitive. They won't win a game the rest of the season.

At the same time, they've erased all goodwilll built by coach Tom Cable at the end of the season, and there appears to be zero vision when it comes to their future.

I haven't a clue of what they're trying to do. Each week, Cable says they practice well and are close to being the team he wants it to be.

On Sunday morning, there was a report on Yahoo.com about the Raiders shopping any and every player they can in a mass fire sale. That's great. Cable says he loves this team heading out of training camp, they're "close" to where they want to be, and five weeks later, they're blowing everything up.

It'll be interesting to see how Cable spins this one. Of course, they'll be no spinning next week.

True, there likely will be just 30,000 fans to watch them play the Eagles. But they'll be hyped. The chants of "Rus-sel sucks! Rus-sel sucks!" that permeated the stadium in the third quarter and beyond will only be heightened. Knowing that stadium, 30,000 angry fans can sound like 60,000.

How the Raiders react is anyone's guess.

What is known is they're headed for another high-round draft pick to blow in April and the start of a one- or two-year search for a starting quarterback.

An abyss unimaginable two months ago.

Being Raider fans

we were disappointed with the way the team played today.  But my husband says we'll get them next week. But I think we should have kept the other quarterback.

After reading this

The 49ers' humbling and embarassing home loss to Atlanta seems, well, almost tolerable.

Coach Sing will not be a happy man ... tonight, or when he watches the film of this debacle tomorrow. Any Niners who thought their bye week might include an extra day of rest are in for a rude awakening. But they probably figured that out at halftime.

Anyway, BC, I have more confidence that the 49ers will make whatever adjustment is necessary. I pity Raider fans, whose admirable loyalty and passion has been rewarded by running into the ground one of the sport's proudest franchises. It's sad to watch.

When will raider fans

When will raider fans realize that you QB is not a QB he is over weight slow out the pocket. he cannot pass while on the run and cant throw if he had a fence with a lock on him.  just like a radier fan there famous quotes "wait tell next year"," wait and see when we get himm back"  and now this quote "But my husband says we'll get them next week". get a clue he isnt thinking about the team he is all about him and his flashy studs in his ear just like half the team. as for BLC dude why why why. oh well  wait tell next year next week next month or when uncle AL sells his team

My poor Niners

What a horrible game we had - I think Crabtree has jinxed us and should be relegated to water boy for one full year. BUT...I can say...at least we are not the Raiders. tee hee

We're fans

We always hope for the best.  We'll cheer for them win or lose.

You got that right!

Niner faithfuls to the end...and Raider Nation forever...we are FANS!!!!

I feel bad for Raiders' fans.

I feel so bad for Raiders' fans.  Year after year, since they last played in the Super Bowl anyway, they have been bad, bad, bad.

What baffles me is that pick someone like JeMarcus Russell No. 1 in the draft, and thus far, he's been pretty awful.  And, then you have guys like Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, and this year, Mark Sanchez.  Those guys have had an immediate impact as Quarterbacks in the NFL.  My only question.....is what the hell are the Raiders' Scouts thinking?????

I hope they can turn it around.  But I don't see that happening until Al Davis is gone.  Too sad, as he is a Legend in his own right.

I can't figure out draft picks either....

I think Alex Smith was a huge mistake for the Niners...so I understand your question. I don't get it.

ooooo Alex Smith

Alex Smith....I forgot that pick by the 49ers.  That didn't turn out all that well did it?

I guess Nolan can take the credit for that one.  However, he deserves all the credit for Frank Gore, Manny Lawson, Patrick Willis, etc.  Those were his picks.

Poor Raiders though.  6 or 7 losing seasons in a row and just the same amount of head coaches.  I think they be years away from being a decent football team.

I agree that things ...

won't get better until Al Davis goes. He is the head scout. Although, it should be noted, that there were a lot of people outside of the Raiders very high on Russell, and at that time, the Raiders needed a quarterback.

My contention all along is that if the Raiders had not hired Art Shell, and languished in that truly awful offensive season, Andrew Walter might have gotten a better chance to succeed. Instead, he had no chance for success, and because of it, the Raiders were in need of a quarterback.

Had Walter played in a system conducive to his abilities, or anyone's abilities for that matter, the Raiders would have had a quarterback in place and then could have drafted wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

But, that didn't happen.

And while a lot of Raider fans like to point to a lot of players drafted in rounds 3-6 who have actually gone on to start for the team ... Raider fans like to say Davis does a great job in the lower rounds ... those players simply start for the worst organization in all of football.

Oh well. I'm an East Bay product, and that's my team.

I do like the 49ers, and their CEO Jed York. What they need, though, is a quarterback. Shaun Hill will never lead them back from a two-touchdown deficit, and you have to have that to get deep into the playoffs.

no kidding

I like what Shaun has done, but the days when we could be down by 2 with 4minutes left and think, "we are still in it...lot of football left" are gone...until the next Montana graduates maybe? :)
