Editors Desk: Enough with personal attacks

Editors_Desk's picture

Over the past two weeks I've spent a considerable amount of time trying to keep spam off the site. Given the choice, I'd much rather battle spammers than the shameful, vituperative attacks a few bloggers on this site have launched against other bloggers in recent days.

Even more regrettably, these attacks have come from some of our most active and longest active bloggers. More's the pity.

You can hunt for dirt on each other in court documents and other public records all you want, but don't put it here on The Hive. I've just removed several posts and comments from the site, and I don't want to see any more.

This isn't a matter of free speech. This is a matter of maintaining an online community for civil public interaction.

Word-Up

It was starting to stink in here....

Dan...

can candidates' and their staff's judgments be questioned? Can you give a clear on concise boundry of what can and can't be said?

Thank you Dan

Thank you Dan.

The hive should be a place where we can interact in a "lively" opinion forum.   Where we can feel free to speak safely with our opinions or questions, or provide information that we may know.

I applaud the Bee for speaking about the personal attacks on the bloggers here.  I want to know that I can speak my opinion about concerns I have within the community.

I have no personal attachment to anyone else on this blog, nor have I ever met anyone on here, however it is assumed that because I have certain opinions, that I must be "aligned" with some group conspiracy.  My opinions are "my own" and not some "group think" mentality.  My opinions also come from my own experiences and knowledge within our community.

Thank you for allowing us a forum where we can provide the "lively interaction" which will occur when we can all speak our own opinion.

Boundaries

I'm not going to get into that. Suffice it to say that there's a difference between public figures and private figures.

Editors Desk

Dan, I do hope you can clarify boundaries between a Hive blogger and a campaign official for a local City Council candidate no less.

Blog editing

Thanks Dan. I have been disturbed by the vitriol of the bloggers. Some with obvious agendas. Civil discourse is a lost art in our "hate Talk" society. Debate is beneficial to all. Hate divides us and is counterproductive. Be civil to all, and cast no stones.

Boundaries II

I repeat:

"Suffice it to say that there's a difference between public figures and private figures."

Edirors Desk

So why is it, you deny the knowledge of the lie which was perpetrated against the Superior Court. Allow me befor an editors meeeting and view the data which has beeen metiulously maintained and ask yourselves, as the reorters of fact, what occurred.

I ask nothing more than tha. We live in proximity to others wh have no idea what goes on behind closed doors, and that is how it should be.

Don't talk the tak unles you can walk the walk.

Here here Dan

Thank you for stepping in on this vile conduct.  Last night activist1 called me a sock puppet.  I am not one.  I sign with my name and do not hide as I am in plain view.  However, I am starting to regret that decision because there are some hivers that clearly need anger management therapy.   If you have an opinoin that is one thing.  You also should point out that it is an opinion.  People put things on the hive and pass it off as fact.

Please remember, when debating, it is wise not to personally attack someone for their views. Everyone has a right to their opinion and if we all thought alike it would be a boring world in which we live. In order to represent your side effectively one needs to look at both sides of the fence, only then can you make for a good debate and informed decision.

Thank you Dan!!!

Thank you for trying to keep the Hive free from spammers and other distractions! :)

Thanks, Dan.

Thanks, Dan.  I think your brief description of "boundaries" makes sense.

I think it is important to remember that when people inject themselves into the public arena through politics, they subject themselves to scrutiny.  The public has every right to know the history and backgroun of each and evey candidate and the folks they associate themselves with.

Thank you, this was getting

Thank you, this was getting out of hand. It amazes me to see how these things grow and grow and actually does nothing but create animosity and division. I guess it’s easier to bad mouth others then it is to look at oneself and see that we all have warts.

I suppose if you are so pure and holy then you can find fault with others, because there isn’t anything wrong with you. I don’t understand how some can say how Christian they are and yet they not only judge others they condemn them, without really knowing the truth of the matter. They are so self righteous that they become blind to everything and everyone that is in the least different from what they consider the only way and the only truth. They refuse to actually consider the real issues, the things that affect our everyday lives, they would rather find fault with someone and build on that.

They tend to thrive on gossip and innuendo, and could not care less about the facts and the truth.

So I am glad you have taken steps to rectify this situation. Thank you.

Charlie Lockett

I appreciate you Dan for putting Activist and Heaton in order!!

When that post came out I was frankly surprised that The Bee even allowed it.  I would never have known anything about Mr. Em if I hadn't read all the stuff that was placed here in the last couple of days.  I don't read the Bee alot so I NEVER saw the article that she, Abstract and Heaton put on this site!!

As I said last night, I pray that Truthseekers comes through this.  I had my questions about certain things but was really upset that Activist1 was being allowed to continue to try and destroy someones reputation!  She was finally "put to sleep like a Rabid Dog"

Congratulations Dan for making a very WISE decision.

Charlie

As always you speak with a resonance of logic and reason.

I am probably one who has beeen guilty of lambasting peple. That was not my intent. I never said Bikerack, as an example was a Korean vet, I have made no claims for him or myself other than that I know to be the truth.

We are plorizing ourselves because we refuse to read history. I think it speaks well of the Uniteed States that President Obama was the Nobel Peace Prize. Isn't that what we elected this man to accomplish.

Iraq/Afghanistan are issue we should be discussing today.

My first Public records Request was 1963 to te Central Intelligence Agency as we debasted  causa bellum, the just war theory what I receivd was so rdacted  but was enough to gain certain balance on the why. There appears as 45 million go to medicare we have a problem

$2 Trillion to Iraq and this congress waants to debate a $890 Billion ten year expansion of medical coverage? How much did this same congress give to the Iraq and now Afghanistan...how many more of our young men and women will never live to see the birth of their first child, the reality of life, but have it snuffed which  reall in the Charge of the Light Brigade. There are noo Dunga Dins it appears as Nationalism, the sames as the 40's has re-emerged.

My last point the Olympics. Bravo Brazil. I don't know if you follow Latin Amerca politiccs, buth Brazil's president was on Charlie Rose many years ago. Articulate and cretain his inquiry then was why was there no represenation from South America on the Security Counsel. We don't in my opinion get the rest of the world. Modesto has fine people and like myself are absorbed i their own lives.

The changes of the 60's were created by the 16-22 year olds who were threatened with draft or school. They made the change. The affected the America we know and spoiled their own and now in sports and school there are no winners or losers. That's a terrible thing for a youth to understand.

I should ask you to ggoogle Barnes Wallace v oy Scouts as it applies directly to a loan between a divinity locally and a Youth Program and the extortion of funds from negotiations.

We stand together or we fall and anarch reigns. We need need a Citizens Group for the oversight of the MPD. The Goverened have forgotten to Govern themselves.

Thanks for your input.

Thank You Dan

JHeaton and Activist1 were getting out of hand again.

Good Call Dan.

Dan made it clear

There is a difference between a pubic figure (Robert Stanford) and a private figure(Emerson Drake)

The attack against Robert Stanford's campaign went beyond the boundries of which common sense and courtesy for others a sort of etiquette. I admit I have fallen into their snares and retalliated with  venom and trollism, but thats my excuse.

Thanks Dan, for making a difference on the hive I am sure we will be better off.

AbstrACT's picture

Wayne....

you are reading into it what you want to see. The fact of the matter is that the blogs removed were pertaining to private citizens. The blog's pertaining to Robert and Emmerson are still up for discussion- they have not been removed. Of course a candidate's campaign manager or treasurer is not going to be immune from public scrutiny. That's a no-brainer.

well they should have been removed

which blogs were taken down?

Just a question, Wayne...

How is a campaign official for a candidate running for public office a private figure, coupled with the fact that TS speaks at City Council meetings, goes on The Morning Mayor show with Carmen Sabatino, and spreads his vitriol here on the Hive? How is that person a private figure?

Using Dan Day's logic, only elected officials are public figures. What about political players like TS? I see TS as a player in the local political process and therefore is not a private figure.

These are the days

I'll bet Dan has some interesting conversations at the dinner table when he spends his day reading all the hate and venom spewed amongst the bloggers.

Conversation probably goes something like "I don't get paid enough for this..."

Good job editors - not everyone can behave themselves in polite society.

ChristofferH's picture

Yep, hate to agree....

TS is just as much fair game as the people who work in our schools and are responsible for our kids....

*hiccup*

@DMC LOL!

Emerson Drake's private life is just that private

So in your mind he spreads vitriol, thats your opinion not mine.

mtber please give us your true identity and permission to search your background so we can all pick at it.

You complained about me calling you and ericj "magpies" yeah your really offended yet you call truthseekers names and make insults..........take the beam from your own eye first.

ChristofferH's picture

I'd also like to add....

WAYNE FOR GRAND GALACTIC INQUISITOR-2012

But I wanna be Galatic Inquistor

or whatever...isn't it like the Grand Poohbah?

I didn't complain about magpies, Wayne

My issue is that TS is indeed a public figure.

For Joe Six Pack who never reads the paper, doesn't attend a meeting, doesn't vote, doesn't care, never gets quoted, doesn't contribute money, don't get involved in a campaign - now that's a private person in my book.

But a guy who goes on the radio at least once a week for one, sometimes two hours, attacks other candidates here on The Hive, goes to City Council meetings, volunteers as the campaign treasurer for a City Council candidate - and gets arrested - that's not exactly a private person, Wayne.

Sorry Mr. Dan Day, but your definition of private versus public is increasingly fuzzy, vague and ambiguous.

ChristofferH's picture

You could be Vice-Grand-Galactic-Inquisitor?

Although the costume won't be as bitchin' as Waynes...

Enough about magpies, I prefer Sparrows and Nightingales...

I thought I was the Galactic Inquisitor

dmcgarry, the answer is No the Galactict Inquisitor is different from the grand pooh-bah. The Grand pooh-bah where's a fez, and   I wear a helmet and speak with a deep voice.

AbstrACT's picture

I Think You're Mistaken Eric.....

Dan didn't say that T/S is a private figure. That was Wayne's interpretation. However, the blogs about T/S are still standing, so that speaks for itself. Wayne, you can't expect the rules to change simply because you want to protect a friend can you? T/S is a public figure and involved in a campaign directly affecting the public.

ChrisH

That was really close to what the Galactic inquisitor wears, with one exception I wear a blue robe with stars and moon shapes. Oh! and with the darth vadar helmet. Some times I wear black.

Abs

Here's Editors Desk's response from earlier (and that's why I'm challenging his notion as being far too vague and nebulous):

Boundaries II

I repeat:

"Suffice it to say that there's a difference between public figures and private figures."

Activist1's picture

Abs is correct Eric

Drake isn't a private figure, JHeaton is though.

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt

ChristofferH's picture

Damn.....

.....we're going to need a tailor to put all that together!

I think Halloween would be a great opportunity for a dress rehearsal!

Agree, Act1

I gotcha. Therefore, it's safe to say that TS is a public figure even if Wayne wants to disagree without substantiation or reinforcing his assertions with adequate evidence.

Try again next time, Wayne. Your buddy Emmie is quite the public figure and should be subject to public scrutiny just like his candidate buddy.

Activist1's picture

I love Halloween!

activisttoo's picture

thank you

I agree with wilderj, in that there is a difference between opinion and libelous comments.

The BEEHive should be a place where that can happen but in a civil and respectful way.

Thank you for taking the steps necessary to make the BEEHive a better palce to debate.

The next step might be educating people, in a simple way, what it means that "you may not post content that is libelous, defamatory, obscene, abusive,  that violates a third party's right to privacy, that otherwise violates any applicable local, state, national or international law, or that is otherwise inappropriate".     I understand the policy is posted & that people can read it, but maybe the problem lies in the comprehension.  Everyone learns different, so maybe it needs to be explained differently.  It seems to me that libel & abusive might be the first topics you cover.

I look forward to learning, debating, & communicating!

Be safe.  Be positive.

My job is done

...for now.  But if things get out of hand again.  I'll shall return.

Calling all blogger's

Some of you have been guilty for the things you are saying about Activist1 however, since I came to blog here, I noticed Activist1's personal attacks on almost everyone and anyone.  I know it is hard not to give in when she really provokes an ambush. I was blogging for about one week when she attacked me for the first time. I had no clue who, what, why or when I deserved it.  I think if Dan Day would go over the blogs when the spreading of hate began I am under the opinion that Activist1 would be the leader. I have also noticed that many bloggers try to watch their p's and q's but activist1 comes up with such venom that it is difficult to sit idly by. Let us try to kill her with kindness and not give her any ammunition to use against us. One can always chose the higher road.

New mantra

Humility, compassion and respect for one self and others goes a long way.
