After Deadline: News from Monterey, race for Denham's seat taking shape

Here's a note from the Monterey Herald indicating that former Salinas mayor Anna Caballero intends to run for the state senate seat held by Republican Jeff Denham of Atwater.

Caballero's a Democrat. Ceres Mayor Anthony Cannella, a Republican, also is planning to run for the seat.

Denham is preparing a run for lieutenant governor.

Democrats have a wide majority in District 12, the one Denham represents. The latest figures at the Secretary of State's office show that 47 percent of the voters are Democrats while 33 percent registered as Republicans.

Stanislaus and Merced counties, however, have a majority of voters in the five-county district.

Denham lived in Salinas in his first run for this seat, but moved to Atwater after he won.

Go Anthony

Cannella follows in a long line of central valley politicians that have crossed party lines to represent the average man or woman in a respectable fashion.

We are lucky to have a straight shooter running for this important seat.

Airport Protector....

I completely agree.  Anthony Cannella is one the most nicest, most honest guys I have met in local politics.

He lacks

pretense.  When he speaks on an issue, he says what he believes.  Many of our current crop of politicians wait to see which way the wind will blow before deciding what their "convictions" consist of.

AA: This appeared a while

This appeared a while back on a Patterson Blog, Caballero by at least 8%, she is a strong opponent.  Anthony is a nice guy, but his record in ceres doesn't exactly spell superstar.  Have you been to Ceres lately?  Anthony should take what he wanted first, district 5, then move from there.

I can see your point, and maybe the appropriate approach would be go for Supervisor, and then on to State Senate.  But who knows.  He's got name recognition at the State level.

Cannella has only had a few fundraisers, etc., and things will heat up here in a couple of months as we move closer to November.  So, I am not sure that 8% says ALL that much at this point in the race.

This area is growing tired of family dynasties.  The 8% prediction has more to do with the district than the candidates.  Caballero already working hard gathering scars on the water fight...while Anthony still hit with the stigma of not leaving ceres any better off.  He's not exactly a game changer.  Grover would be a better candidate, but our former Assemblyman sealed that deal long ago.

Grover a better candidate

former assemblyman isn't Sal....

Is it growing tired?

Is it growing tired?  I am not sure.  I don't really have a sense either way.

As far as Ceres is concerned, I think any Mayor/Council Member of any jurisdiction in CA is not leaving their respective City "better off."  Nobody is better off than they were a few years ago.  I am not sure that is a fair assessment.

I think everyone is expecting a LOW voter turnout in November (if you believe it can get any lower...haha).  I think it will come down to who can garner the most interest and inspire people to get out and vote.

More work definitely needs to be done.  I have yet to see signs, mailers, etc. from Cannella.  Hopefully they will be sent out soon....and I am sure they will be.

Cannella

If someone can point to an example of Cannella exerting above average vision and leadership......I'm listening.  Even when times were high, his tenure lacked that plus factor.  A new police station/firestation won't cut it.
