After Deadline: Park bathrooms are open, who knew?
Modesto City Manager Greg Nyhoff on Monday reported that the city found a way to keep park restrooms open, at least through Thanksgiving. That's a reverse over summer budget cuts that promised to nix the bathrooms on weekdays at most city parks.
I've been out of town. Has anyone noticed this? I know Truthseekers was checking when the bathrooms closed around July. Apparently they reopened later in the summer.
This came out as part of a discussion on budget cuts within the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department. That department crossed boundaries in City Hall to team up with its counterparts in Public Works to devise a way to irrigate small parks with inexpensive wells that would take the fields off the city's drinking water system.
Each of the small wells would cost between $40,000 to $50,000, but would reduce the need for drinking water wells that have pricetags running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
"It's the right thing to do for our aquifer," Deputy Public Works Director Allen Lagarbo said. "It's the right thing to do for our customers and the citizens who want green parks."
It's going to take awhile to see these wells go in the ground. Yesterday's discussion took place at the council's Finance Committee, which does not have the authority to solicit contracts.

I've noticed at Moose Park....
I've noticed the restrooms have been open during the week at Moose Park. In fact, as I rode by the other day, I was wondering why they weren't closed...
My daughter's soccer team practices at Orchard Park
and for about two weeks in July we had to shuttle the girls to our house for restroom breaks. The restrooms were then opened again and have been since.
sdm...may i inqure of you
did MYSA publish rosters of the kids particpating on your daughter's team?
Interesting.....
Interesing that while City Council was in discussion on this topic, and voted to close the restrooms, during the week, many people were up in arms in strong opposition.
And now that the restrooms are open again........silence. Not even an acknowledgement.
They were thanked at the meeting last night
for both the bathrooms being opened and for the lights that are going to be installed in the parks.
But..
Isn't that their responsibility or job, to respond to the needs and concerns of the citizens?
It depends....
I suppose it is their responsibility to respond to needs and concerns. But, I would ask....what are the needs, and what are the concerns?
It's a pretty OPEN ended question....considering everyone's needs and concerns are sometimes different.
The lights will be nice, especially in the Winter. I ride my bike at night at Dry Creek in the winter. Two things I ALWAYS bring with.....lights (of course) and pepper spray.
Could it be they want to be re-elected?
When people started voicing their concerns about park restroom closures it brought it to the forefront. Maybe incumbent council members realized they were alienating voters. It was a stupid decision in the first place and I am pleased that they opened the restrooms. But it does not change the fact that they made the decision in the first place. Why didn't they think of this option before they closed them? Is it a coincidence that they now have them open until after thanksgiving, which happens to be after the elections? I THINK NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think you're right wilderj
The PTB(powers that be) decided if Olsen was going to be re-elected that they better get the restrooms open. What was interesting is that it was a question from the audience that got the word out to the public city wide.
I don't think they wanted to admit
they made such a shortsighted decision in the first place.
when they closed
When they closed the restrooms many people were surprised. I was one of them that didn't realize they were planing to do this. Somehow I missed the press coverage. I was not alone, many people were unaware of their intentions. The council made this decicsion with meetings held during the day, it appearred to be underhanded at best. I for one am looking forward to fresh blood and minds this coming election.
Olsen just part of the same
I personally will not vote for her because she ran last time on the the premise of understanding families. Yet, she over saw a project for beautification (trees) and then this year voted to close park restrooms, etc. That's right we need more trees that we cannot even maintain forget what the citizens really want. Need new blood in the council, that can come with innovative ideas and not just be part of the status quo. As my grandmother would say "Actions speak louder than words".
Me Too
I won't vote for her either, but she will still win. Depressing...
Just lip service for Olsen
Justifying her decisions to vote for raises. In the Bee today Olsen said she voted for the pay increase because higher salaries will attract more diverse candidates to run for council. "I don't believe that Modesto government should be set up so that the only people who can run for office are those that are wealthy, or retired, or stay-at-home moms," she said. Yet she has raised 40K compared to her opponents 4K. Did you know that her husband was a victim of dumpster divers? No wonder she voted for the ordinance. How about all those wonderful trees she plants even though we don't have the resources to keep them up? Close the parks and plant more trees sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Joe Cataline is working hard to prevent it.
And upsets do happen. After all that's how Olsen was elected in the first place. That and the fact that Denny Jackman didn't campaign very much.
Not a chance
Olsen has a large block of voters in her pocket. Local politics is dominated by individuals that can roll out several hundred certain votes. Jackman lost to Big Valley Church. He could have campainged forever and he wouldn't have overcome the large block deficit.
Olsen can only be defeated in Modesto by Brad Hawn and his large block. That would be interesting and there would be no clear cut winner.
Is Cataline seriously the ideal canidate to run against Olsen? Come on.
Have to agree with aiportprotector
It is rarely about who tthe best canidate is for the job and more to have to do with who one has in their pocket. My neighborhood is blanketed with Olsen sings every third house for many blocks. She is getting alot of notice because of this tactic. Unfortunately people do not educate themselves before voting and name recognition. To those I quote Olsen's platform. Olsen PRIORITIES: Bolstering public safety resources and fighting drug-related crime. Tell me, what she has done to fight the drug-related crime thus far? Just another platform to get her re-elected?
So...
She must have been thinking that the shopping carts were being used to transport drugs. Now I understand why so much time and energy was wasted while our city melted (along with the rest of the valley).
airportprotector Now that's funny!
Maybe she has it in for the homeless. First shopping carts, then dumpster divers and then park restroom closures. Seems to be a pattern here.
