Editors Desk: Good hands, bad hands at the ballpark

Here's a nice vignette from last night's ballgame at John Thurman Field in which the Modesto Nuts defeated High Desert 2-0 and ended the 45-game hitting streak of the Mavericks' Jamie McOwen. In the middle of the fifth inning, Nuts staffers went onto the field to launch T-shirts into the stands. One of them sailed into the section where I was sitting and arced straight toward Modesto's acting police chief, Mike Hardin. Sitting a few rows behind me, Hardin made a perfect two-handed catch. He grinned and immediately turned to the couple across the aisle, tossing them the shirt.

A nice moment.

As graceful as the chief was, I was not. Before the game, my son and I grabbed dinner from one of the concession stands and settled into our seats. I thought it would be a great idea to get a picture of my meal: A Diet Coke, a sausage sandwich and the mound of cheese-covered garlic fries my son and I were splitting.

As I started to focus the camera, the platter came splattering down onto my shoes.

E - as in error - for editor.
