Cops Use Riot Gear at Fat Cat...
Cops used riot gear to disperse crowd at downtown Modesto club
By Leslie Albrecht
Nine arrested in weekend disturbance
Nine people were arrested early Saturday after a confrontation between police and drunken patrons at a downtown club, police said. About 40 officers and deputies responded to the incident, which started at 12:38 a.m. at the Fat Cat nightclub on 11th Street, said Modesto police spokesman Sgt. Brian Findlen.
The confrontation lasted about 15 minutes. During the first few minutes, officers were outnumbered by "uncooperative and confrontational" people, Findlen said. Officers called for additional units. About 18 deputies from the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department responded, as did at least one Ceres police officer.
At one point, officers donned helmets and batons and formed what's called a "skirmish line." The line of about 12 to 15 officers directed a crowd of 70 to 100 people to move away from the Fat Cat toward I Street, Findlen said.

I'd use any excuse to donn riot gear...
It looks fun : D
Somehow, I don't find it ludicrous that the police felt the same way as I do about riot gear...

40 officers
That's good to know we can muster 40 officers, within 20 minutes time. I would have expected CHP to also be present.
Not sure the reason for the riot gear if the crowd does not have weapons, but glad to know their not lacking necessary epuipment, just don't understand them being tazed if they had no weapons.
Looking forward to the video tape.
This is one riot of many to come.
Hell I dunno Wayne....20 minutes?
The fat cat is like a couple of blocks from the station FFS!
(paste irrelevant quote here)
GOOD POINT !
The forty officers were at the station ........doing what, playing cards?
Don't we have a quarter million dollar assault Humvee or
something like that I saw a pic of in the paper sometime back. They can fire right out the port-holes I think. Is that ever used? Or is is just for parades?
For some reason, this incident reminds me of the "Tank" we taxpayers own.
Who knows?!
Maybe they needed twenty minutes to get all that riot gear on?

Can I borrow two sets of riot gear?
Alrighty 'mow! We're gonna play 'chicken' with our helmets like the cops in Supertroopers did! And we're gonna do it right 'mow!

Thats right Bikerack
They should have called for the sheriffs anti-gang tank, the posse and have scrambled the heli-copters just in case...: D
Never know how these huge crowds are going to act under the "force of alchohol"
Is the anti-gang tank we bought ever used. I never hear of it
being used. And it cost 1/4 million $.
Wayne...
Did you forget the National Guard? It's always the police way. They are servants of the community, the moment you place on riot gear, those whom they are sworn to protect become the enemy. Jefferson, Wasdon (cough) and now Hardin we need more local law enforcement yes, but doing "their job" in riot gear changes thier position. Keep up your commentary you are gaining a convert.
Make sure you read the comments after the article.
they say the Bee got the story wrong and or the police are blowing out of proportion.
DOWNTOWN PATROLS
Why not just have the police march in tandem in front of the clubs, maybe the goose step would be appropiate.
" Wir Polizei das,viel spab "
This would surely prevent anymore riot's
Article Comments...
I just read the comments on this Article, and I wish I hadn't. Calls to close the Fat Cat, etc. Give me a break.
Riot?
Can this really be considered a riot? Just because the police wear their protective riot gear doesn't autmotically make what happen a riot.
This seems to be far from a riot.
I've been downtown on the weekend nights plenty of times, and incidents like these a very very few and far between. For the most part, the clubs themselves do a pretty good job of regulating the clientele. Unfortunately, every once in awhile a few bad apples can spoil it for those just wanting to have a good time.
It is funny when they do happen thought, as this is the time people come of the woodwork to call for the closure of clubs, etc. Ignorance I say.
Joe McCarthy
Thanks, Joe. We may be seeing a glimpse of things to come.
Riot gear was over-kill I think Hardin is watching the riots in Iran too much, and got carried away on this one.
Or he may be vieing to become the next Dictator of Modesto.. the sheriff could be over-thrown...: D
