After Deadline: Critic refers to Los Banos mayor with the "N" word at council meeting

I'm leaving Modesto and Stanislaus County to take note of some serious bad form in Los Banos.

Eugene Forte, a local government gadfly, reportedly used the "N-word" when speaking to Los Banos Mayor Tommy Jones at a City Council meeting last month. Here's an editorial from the Los Banos Enterprise on the exchange.

The paper has published some letters to the editor on both sides of the meeting. I'm not in Los Banos and I wasn't at the meeting. As an outsider, it's hard to imagine the other side. The letters appear to paint Forte as a loose cannon.

But, like in Riverbank, Los Banos appears to be experiencing a tumultuous period in local politics. There's an effort under way to recall Jones and two other council members.

I'm fighting the urge to spot a trend.

Way out of line...

What a despicable comment if it is indeed the way things went down at the meeting. The mayor of Los Banos seems like an upstanding individual, too. I couldn't think of a more upstanding guy - teacher, coach, involved citizen. Here's his bio.

I couldn't find the name of the newspaper Eugene Forte publishes.

Here's a little more

Here's a little more.

Forte publishes the Badger Flate Gazette. I haven't seen that publication. It appears he filed an assault charge against an Enterprise reporter after the meeting. The reporter is back on the job, so it couldn't have gone much of anywhere.

There is no excuse to use the "N" word.....ever.

This holds true regardless of being used in a public forum or a local golf course with "white" acquaintances. Using the "N" word is not a free speech right. No way.

In a public forum, it's use should be denounced immediately and the speaker ESCOURTED OUT OF THE BUILDING. In the leisure of public, the user should be told straight-up not to use it. I have done just that several times.

Silence is just the same as agreeing with what is going on. We see this middle-ground position used all the time by some on the Hive ("Weak").

"Rednecks" (they love to be called that for some reason) think it's appropriate if "they decide" it is OK.

And if you really want to see where the heart of the problem lays, just take a close look at the racial balance in small agricultural community's throughout the Central Valley. For the most part the African Americans are still not allowed to settle. The total African American race itself, is blatantly marginalized in these small town community's to this day. Pretty sad indeed. However, bring the issue in front of the face of a white supremest, and get ready to be attacked. "How dare you say that about me".

It goes right along with the parents of Rednecks having their children holler out at demonstrating homosexuals (Briggsmore/Coffee Rd.)things like fag, queer, etc. Or in other areas, bloggers posting time and again how bad the Mexican "immigration" population is. We saw that in the swine flue scare(Taco Trucks, Spanish speaking business people) and non-factual immigration statistics displayed, aimed at diminishing ALL Mexicans in the eyes of white citizens.

I like blogging a little more serious and getting right to the issue quickly without the use of those dumb pictures. I can easily get right to the heart of the matter. So thanks ModBee for your help.

Sorry if I offended anyone. If I did, prove me wrong.

Trend?

More like prevelance of ignorance and hate.

This Council member should be tossed out on his... ear. What a sorry excuse of a public servant.

The N-word is NOT or should NOT be protected under Freedom of Speech when it is used, as it seems in this instance, to be a low-blow, nasty insult to another person who I am guessing is black?.

In a room with by black brothers, they want to use it? fine and dandy with me. It is their business to take a word meant to demoralize them and make a joke out of it.

We have so far to go...

Has no one else

Felt how disgusting this Council Member's behavior is? Has no one else replied because Los Banos is not exactly in our backyard?

Like BikeRack said better than I ever could, Our Country, Our State and our County has plenty of people that share the same trait as the Los Banos Council member. They just try to keep it on the down-low.

Then there are those who ever so faintly try to viel their hate right here on the Hive, but come across loud and clear.

The Bigot blogs could be blamed

The internet has provided a place for bigote to spew their hatred at the colored folk.

Calling one the  "N" word is the same thing as calling a person a slave in my book it is a shame, and should be.  Ive travelad all across this country and it is rarely used in public, even in the south and the one that uses it in public wishes to be tried to make themselves the martyr for the cause. I say fry this maggot then ask what jheaton feels about the incident.

One of the many thing I have

One of the many thing I have learned over the years is once a person starts spewing how they have a certain type of friend (in this case black people) it is to hide their true inner prejudices.  To me this is the true “prevalence” of the racial divide in this country.  There are people from all walks of life whom I enjoy and some I do not.  I do not need to flaunt them to prove to anyone that I am not a racist.  The people who do feel they need to flaunt their acquaintances are the true racist.  In addition, read the article, the guy seems to be a nut not a council member.

FYI BR

That company sponsors the website vistor's counter. That is how they market their service. That simple.

Whats your point?

There are many people with a variety of friends.  The ones that need to point out their friends, to what  prove they can associate with “other” people, are the true racist.  If anyone is offended by this maybe, its time they re-evaluate why they feel compelled to tell everyone they have a friend who is a _____, fill in the blank, to prove they are not bias.  .  Its that simple.

As for

Mr. Forte saying what he did? He was wrong but he has the right to say it. And he did say it in person to the man.  And it is quite obvious  Mayor Jones is a better man the Forte.

Hypocritical

When the editor talks of inappropiate images, there is  total outrage.  ‘The editor is limiting free speech by censoring the hive.’  Now when a person, who seems that his elevator doesn't go to the top floor, says something inappropriate, they want him censored, tar and feathered.  Or, maybe it was because they thought he was on the city council?

No new laws or violence is needed!  Society will tell him he was out of line and I am sure he hurt his own cause.

Free speech is a great thing lets all enjoy it responsibly.

Wrong JHeaton

"Mr. Forte saying what he did? He was wrong but he has the right to say it."

Free speech does not give anyone the right to say anything they want, regardless if they were in their face or not.

There are many case law examples that have defined this issue.

IHMO I agree. Normal people in Society will put a stop to this also.

Do some research and you will find out Heaton.

Fire

I do not believe there are any court cases, which makes uttering a certain word a crime.  There is no law or court decision, which prohibits yelling “fire” in a crowded theater.  There is an older decision that mentions “Falsely, shouting fire….”   It was an example used by the judge.  This is a very touchy area even for the courts, like it or not, it hinders free speech.   There is no way the mayor or council could have ejected him.  They are the government; they have the 1st and 14th amendments to think about.

Isn't yelling fire in a theater not on fire falsely yelling fire

Wasn't that my point?

Well let's test that theory...

FIRE!!!! The Hive is on FIRE!!!

Everyone needs to GET OUT immediately!

See the flames? Run for your lives!

Activist1 and JHeaton placed black mannequins with a rope tied

around the necks, hanging from a tree right in their front yards last Halloween and thought that was OK "because they have free speech rights". At least they said they would do that, as that "was their legal right".

It's in the Hive blogs.

Horrible!

To paraphrase an old saying,

racism is the moron's lance. When addressing the issues fails, when a thoughtful interchange of ideas is beyond one's capabilties, when one's self-loathing needs to find an outlet, racial epithets, casting aspersions against another's orientation, or denigrating their gender is the last resort. I've been called everything a member of my race can be called (I lived in Oakland for some time), and I always found that the issuers of vileness were always thunderstruck when I addressed the issue at hand regarding the matter of their ignorance and uncultured behavior, rather than their race. A city council meeting isn't the forum in which to sling slurs, for it's offensive to others, no matter what their race. Sure, we enjoy free speech here, but the use of N_, HMF, bok wei, gai jing, gora, pinche gringo, and other terms of this nature are better saved for use in dive bars and among those whose taste leans toward the foul. I wasn't present, and the editorial didn't address how Mayor Jones responded, if at all, but obviously Mr. Forte was out of line and unjustified in his use of the term. May I suggest some colon cleanse for his foul mouth, and the sacrifice of a hecatomb to address his wretchedness of spirit.

A racist can't help himself

I had worked in the South for a total of around three years, many years ago, and from my experience in seeing racism first hand, it is always the one who has a low self-esteem who resorts to racial slurs, in hopes of antagonism toward a blackman/woman/child or a man/woman/child in hopes of a fight. and dont count out the women they get it fired up more then the men. (sexual innuendo's and lies)

And every now and then you get a klansman who is a cop, the worst kind, because they can imprison you with the stroke of an inkpen.

Then there are the enbred, who do not have any sense whatsoever and continually talk about to no end, and get their butts whipped more often to prove they are for the cause of the affliction of the white folk........pure b.s.

In the rural areas the segragators wait for holidays and special events, and they don't go after the men hispanic/black/jews they go after the children hoping to provoke the mothers and fathers to attack them in response for their child being abused. then they gang up on the minority, and he/she is beaten to a pulp, and tried for crime with plenty of false witnesses.

But that is a very small amount of white americans, very small as most are God fearing Christians who would help you rather than fight you and you want too see some true believers go to the south and they will care for you as the Christ had commanded them...........its the Bible belt. Only Cowards are racist !

Good post Wayne and so very true. And you also

have those that fuel the fire, by remaining quiet or making a joke about it, or talking in abstract when it comes to the fore-front of everyone.

I keep saying time and again, those that stay in middle-ground all the time on issues are just the same as.

Those people in the room in Los Banos have little backbone for remaining quiet. It's OK right then to be quiet to avoid a confrontation in the room, but I would be very interested to hear what they had to say afterwards.

Do what you want everyone, but I watch my back with middle-groundes at all times. In this day and age, it's impossible to align yourself with everyone.

Like Acitivst1 says and she is correct in some ways, "it's a sick and twisted world I live in".

"its a sick and twisted world I live in"

Maybe Activist1 could get better medication to deal her misery, better safe than sorry. Many go without the treatment they need for fear that they may be branded as a nut job, theres no shame in getting the treatment needed, if anything for them itwould be a better world than they realize.

Now if Activist1 would have said, its a sick and twisted world WE live in, it may have been different. But to me when I is mentioned, it reads like a cry for help hopefully treatment is sought.
