After Deadline: Ridenour, Cannella and Campo trying to hold onto local government cash
No rest for the weary, or for those trying to balance government budgets this week.
I've sent out feelers and it doesn't sound like the Modesto Police Officers Association and Modesto Police Management Association are going back to the bargaining table today. I'll let you know if that changes. Eleven cops will lose their jobs Wednesday if the city can't reach a deal for wage concessions with those groups.
Attention remains fixed on the budget talks in Sacramento with billions of dollars on the line.
Mayors and City Council members from around the state are trying to prevent Sacramento from raiding their budgets. Check out the videos at League of California Cities site to get a sense of what they're saying.
Modesto Mayor Jim Ridenour, Ceres Mayor Anthony Cannella and Patterson Mayor Becky Campo are among the contributors. Merced is well represented, too. The link connects to Ridenour's statement.

Interesting....
And some people on here call Mayor Ridenour lazy, when in fact he is just the opposite.
Best of luck to Mayors Ridenour, Cannella, and Campo in their lobbying against the State.
Hard work
Mayor Ridenour is a hard worker and his understanding of the city's challenges has grown over the years. I am glad he is at the helm during these difficult times.
Mountailmama
I agree. Most people don't give Mayor Ridenour the credit he deserves, and some of that is because they fully understand the work that goes into being a Mayor, or Council Member for that matter (not that I do, but I have some experience in what I have observed over the years).
There are some on here who call the Mayor lazy, which is completely off base. I hope those that do see this blog thread.
reply to the above
I don’t think anyone has called him or the council lazy. What most people are concerned about and have commented on is there other areas in the city budget which are a total waste. Those areas should be visited before lay offs. for example, the MPOA has offered other solutions to save on the budget however, the mayor and council will not budge on their position. So who is going to suffer, the citizens of this city. The same citizens who voted these people in and raised their pay to improve on city government. I realize it is not totally the mayor and councils fault. I do believe they could be and should be doing more to cut waste instead of what they are doing. I also hope they get a positive response from Sacramento.
It's interesting
It's interesting that these Mayors are doing something positive (which we hope gets results) on behalf of their respective Cities, and there is hardly any comments posted on this thread. Can't we give credit where credit is due?
Kind of like Giants fans. They only call into KNBR680 when they have a complaint about their team. Now that they are playing fairly well, the Giants discussion on KNBR is relatively minor.
I guess if they were my 2
I guess if they were my 2 year old learning to use the potty and they did one thing positive I would compliment them up and down, maybe even buy them an ice cream. But their not. Doing one thing positive does not change the other issues they are ignoring. If you are happy with poor performance and one thing positive gets you excited that’s your business, I expect more from my elected officials.
I guess even a stopped clock can get it right twice a day.
mtber your support is commendable but...
misplaced.
Credit for the fiasco we are facing? The Council and the MPD are at each others throats and you want to give credit where credit is due...be my guest.
Where do we go from here? Which is the way thats clear?
Support is not misplaced.
In this case, my support is not misplaced. You know as well I do the Mayors of these Cities did not create this fiscal crisis. To place blame on them, I believe, is miguided.
I will give credit where credit is due. The League of California Cities, while I don't agree with all that they do, are working hard on behalf of all Cities in the Valley to keep the State from taking more money. While they may not be successful, I will commend their efforts.
Where do we go from here? Who knows....should be even more interesting next June/July, as it will probably be worse than it is today.
I think we can blame
every financial expert on the planet for the mess we are all in right now. I like John Stewart's take on it:
"Gee, if I had listened to all the experts at MSNBC and CNN, I would be a millionaire today...provided I had started with a hundred million dollars".
Ridenhour and the others didn't cause this mess...now they get to try and fix it. Jeeesh...I'm glad I'm not in politics.
