If those are the rules, change them

last updated: April 23, 2009 07:26:19 PM

I would like to comment on the tragic situation regarding a man dying in the hospital while in custody.

The family was not officially notified by the Sheriff's Department that he had been taken to the hospital. And they were only allowed one 10-minute visit before he became brain-dead.

According to our sheriff, everything was done by the rules. Even the brief visit was only by bending the rules. Well, I say if these are the rules, they need changing.

What kind of heartless rules would keep a family in the dark when a member is hospitalized? And what kind of rules would keep a family from seeing one of its members? And what kind of rules at the hospital would allow doctors and not family members to make end-of-life decisions? Bad rules, that's what kind.

Being arrested does not always mean guilt, and shouldn't mean you no longer have any basic human rights. Terrorist detainees at Gitmo had more people worried about their rights.

We need to change the protocol to ensure that people who are detained are still treated the way we would want to be treated. Where is the outrage? Where is the ACLU?

Hospitalized

And Brain dead, no threat to anyone. and yet a guard continued to record the families words.

Once he was brain dead those rules should have been lifted at the hospital, I see no credible excuse for what they had done to Deputy Prescott and his family.

What they did to the family

What they did to the family is not right.

No it was not.

By following through and making sure that people understand EXACTLY what really happened, we may prevent another family from suffering this pain in the future.

Thanks for the Letter Mr. Ramczyk...

Mr. Ramczyk, welcome to seeing the truth about the ineptness and shallowness of our Sheriff.  You hit the nail on the head as to why he needs to be ousted from office.  Many bloggers feel as I do that he must change his rules to allow for the use of common sense, discretion, and meeting the intent and spirit of national industry standards.  But, all we hear is his silence on this from him.  No press release. No nothing.

Rather deafening, don't you think?

In my opinion, in the highest ranks of the Sheriff's Office there are more occurrences of poor judgment, bad policy, and decisions made without consideration of whether they should do something relying on the knowledge that they can do whatever they want.  I would suggest you read through the blogs on this tragedy and see some of the insensitive, indifferent opinions expressed by supporters of Adam.  You may get the feeling for disgust as I have had in seeing this unfold. I, for one, feel this is just more evidence to a total lack of basic human decency and basic competency in our Sheriff.  To get a better picture, I would suggest you look at all of the blogs on this sheriff where his behavior being described as indicative of possessing narcissistic personality disorder to his own self-description of being a 1000 pound gorilla, and everything in between.  But don't stop there.call Adam. Ask him directly your questions.  Ask him for supporting documents. Ask him to respond.

Adam has had nearly three years to make the changes he wanted.  Why hasn't he done so?  Unfortunately what you see is pure Adam Christianson at his level of ability and competency.  I believe we will have more tragedy in the jails, more lawsuits, and more failure in delivery of law enforcement services from the Sheriff.  Expect it all and expect it all to continue.

I'm sure that someone will run against Adam in the next election.  If you find you feel as you do, then join me in the next election in making certain our failure of a Sheriff, Adam Christianson, joins the ranks of the unemployed. Then, and only then, will he begin to learn of compassion, empathy, and the human condition, something which is dramatically missing in him.  I'm already looking forward to the election in 2010 where the citizens will be able to show their lack of confidence of our current Sheriff, by electing a new Sheriff.

Less than 14 months to go, the countdown begins...

Thanks for reading,

We have someone to take his place.

seems appropriate time...

Just seemed an appropriate time to bring some questions back to the forefront...

The concerns continue....

Did Christianson

Make the rules, or are they dictated by a previous sheriff, or even state law?

Just because he said the policies were followed in this instance, doesn't mean he actually made them.

I know I'm talking to the bash the sheriff brigade here, and I don't think he's great either, but is it really his policy?

Adam responsible for Sheriff's Office policies? You bet he is.

A Sheriff or Chief of Police who assumes office has the responsibility and obligation to set policy for his or her agency, just like a new oncoming CEO of a business does in his or her shop. No previous Sheriff, Chief, or CEO can dictate or obligate a new chief executive, only a legislative body or board of directors can. If a chief executive wants to change policy they can. Or they can do nothing and adopt by their inaction existing policy as that is also a choice.

In Adam's case this is nearly three and a half years into his administration. What would make anyone think the existing policies are not his or what he wants? There was nothing there that would be foreign or a surprise to him.

Three03...

Those are good questions.

Please continue to keep an open mind on the information we post here concerning the Sheriff.

We are exposing the truth about Christianson and his leadership so that  positive changes will happen.

We care deeply about the present health of the Department and it's many dedicated employees.

@onewhoknows

You're totally right, there are policies under his control.  But there are probably a great deal of policies set by the state that aren't under his control.  My question was if this was one of them.  I'm pretty sure he can't walk in on day one and throw every policy in the department out the window and start over, he has some control, but the state probably dictates 90% of it.

You can't compare the sheriff to the CEO, if you did, you should compare the state government to the CEO and the sheriff to a manager of one department in one location.

Three03, you are also quite correct.

Three03, you are also quite correct in the legistlative and regulartory requirements in the context you place it in your comments as well.

My comments were made in the context about the Prescott family not being notified because of the "rules" or "policies" in place. There is nothing in the Title 15 regulations that prohibit the contact of a family member of an inmate in the event of emergency, such as what occurred in the Prescott incident. American Correctional Association jail standards require a policy be made to deal with such. The standard does not say what the policy has to say, only that a policy needs to be in place. The Sheriff does not have to notify an emergency contact if doing so would jeopardize the safety and security of the facility and the staff, as what their rules apparently state.

Here is the concern I and many others share in our criticism of the Sheriff from the facts that were reported. If the inmate, Mr. Prescott, was released from the custody of the Sheriff when he was hospitalized, why would a deputy sheriff custodial officer be at the hospital "guarding" the comatose inmate if the inmate is out of custody? Once released from the custody of the Sheriff, what threat would notifying the family of the emergency present to the safety and security of the facility and the staff?

WHY was a deputy there after inmate was "Released from Custody"?

WHY was a deputy guarding Mr. Prescott after he was declared brain-dead/comatose at the hospital and had been RELEASED FROM CUSTODY?

I don't believe that question has ever been answered.

Shamott, I don't have a clue.

Shamott, I don't have a clue. Perhaps the supervising or managing employees who blog on this site might shed some light on this point.

Maybe some answers with litigation?

Maybe there will be some answers once this case starts litigation and discovery.

Shamott..

that is what I believe will happen.
