How many will attend the local Tax Day tea parties?

Anyone want to offer a prediction on how many people will participate in the Tax Day tea parties locally?  I received an e-mail and a call in response to my Sunday column, available here, but that's it.

I know the anti-government-spending sentiment is widespread, but will it translate to people actually showing up at a tea party? Or doing anything beyond being angry and frustrated?

I plan to check out the Modesto tea party, in Tenth Street Plaza. Anyone who attends others, please feel free to post reports from those vents.

I would LOVE to

I wish I could participate in all kinds of things but I am really going to miss not being able to be a part of these tea parties. Unfortunately, being a graveyard shift worker means day time sleeper...but retirement is only 1 year, 11 months and 15 days away - who is counting?

IF YOU ONLY KNEW

HOW MANY MINORITIES ARE BEING BEATEN IN THE SOUTH, ALSO KNOWN AS THE SOUTH IN DIXIE LAND.

WHY BECAUSE THEY RECIEVE GOVERNEMNT AID, SOCIAL SECURITY, SSI, UNEMPLOYMENT, AND SO ON AND SO FORTH. CALLED OBAMAS AID.

NICE JOB BEE, ANOTHER MISSED STORY, ITS NOT YOU FAULT ITS HAPPENING IN THE RURAL PARTS OF TEXAS. NORTH CENTRAL. AND EAST.

NOT YOUR FAULT, YOU JUST WRITE DOWN WHATS THEY GIVE YA.

ITS A TEA PARTY FOR THE KLAN.

Yeee---UP!

Yeee---UP!

I have yet to understand

I have yet to understand what this is for. I’ve heard that it was to protest the tax increases, but there have been no tax increases, in fact most people got their taxes cut, so that can’t be the reason. Then I heard that it’s because some just want to protest Obama. That sounds more like it, some just don’t want to accept that this country is changing, we have had enough of the redistribution of wealth to the wealthier 2% of the people. Some are just going to believe anything the right wing talking heads say, even if it doesn’t make sense. I’ve heard that the3y are protesting the spending, and that our grand children will be paying for this, yet they ignore the fact that Reagan tripled the national debt and George W. Bush doubled it, and that our grand children will be paying Reagan’s debt, so what Obama has added to the debt is minor compared to the others.

So what this is about I really don’t know. Just a bunch of sheep doing whatever the right wing tells them to do, not even knowing why.

I don't get it either Charlie

If you find out more let me know :) I'm just curious. Also did you hear that Rep. Leno ( I think it is Leno~) is putting another one pay health system bill before the senate tomorrow. I haven't read it yet but I will still keep my fingers crossed...Glendle

Judy

I plan to attend and wish I would have thought about something like this during Bush's socially liberal presidency. There is not a race componet here at all, unless you don't like the Tea Party concept. But when one can't win  the  debate on the issues, the race card is the next step.

And wayne82, sure your name is not Tex?

Wayne2008. I have been following what you say

is taking place in the South. It's for real. Underlying the issues of the less than majority who do not support our President and our Country is residual racism. We collectively have made advances in this area, but not enough. For many Anglo Saxons, it's OK on the surface to say you are for equal opportunity regarding non-white people, but when one wakes up and finds a non-white minority is leading this great country of ours, anger sets in. I believe this is at the very core of some individual feelings and can especially be found lurking in areas such as the Southern portion of our Country and bedroom conservative community's such as Stanislaus County, here at home. Enough said on that.

I do not take these types of protests lightly and I hope others don't as well. We'll just have to see how deep the dissidence runs and just how far protesters want to push the envelope. At the forefront, all protests must stay non-combative. And there is nothing wrong with that type of protesting. However, that is the acid test.

Our country is just at it's infancy of change, the effects of change will be felt for a long while as the problems we confront require long term solutions. President Obama and his team of what I consider to be highly qualified individuals, inherited a total disaster. They need our support more than ever right now and inherent in ourselves is a responsibility as an American to give them just that. If the program(s) fails, I have no problem with pulling back support, but in no way do I condone doing that right now.

The people have spoke and elected President Obama. In no way would I ever let some small dissident group take away from our desire to move forward in a peaceful way. If any group begins to gain momentum against our great country and diminish the progress of our great country, I will be one of the first one's to fight back.

Instead of standing on a street corner or assembling in some room, it would be much more effective for the tax dissidents to send a message through a representative or deliver the message of policy non-agreement theirself.

This resistance is very similar to what I experienced in the Civil Rights movement, even with some physical altercations happening, it's still much less combative so far. That does not mean in any way it will stay that way. We may have the opportunity to possibly witness how far deep hatred really runs in America. Time will tell the story. The Civil Rights movement afforded us that opportunity to witness just how non-compassionate American citizens can be.

I just don't understand this either, Charlie Lockett and Glendle. And thanks for that post Wayne2008. It say a lot.

Teabagging??

Seems our less than informed friends are protesting the old BUSH tax structure in-spite of Obama actually CUTTING taxes on those making UNDER $250,000 . . . they are "protesting" the wealthy paying a fair share in  a nation where a waitress pays MORE percentage of income in TAXES and health care expenses than ANY "CEO" ?

Are they looking for a nation that has no taxes, no government support of social services, education, elderly, children and disabled, no govenment regulations on business, safety, working conditions or health standards  . . . a free nation, where one can have any weapon made on earth, and KEEP all the money one makes, with no one to account to???

. . . . well, THAT nation EXISTS . . . . we call it "Somailia" . . . can I pack your teabags for you?

(I 'speciall like the guy wantin' to go but works late and looking to "retire" . . . and live on the governement "socialism" we call SS and Medicare or did he/she invest so well that the pirates of Wall Street left the 401 still bursting with cash???)

We will witness the gathering of the tool fools of the 5%ers . . .

Why there is a Tea Party

For those that wonder why there is a tea party on tax day, think back a month and relive what the state of Calif was going through in trying to come up with a budget. There were deficits and red ink everywere and there is no future plan on how to handle the financial crisis. It is temporaily solved for a year. Americans all over this country do not want other states or the federal government falling into the same trap that Calif has though we heading down that road.

Why is there a tea party, perhaps Phil Kerpen says it best:

This week’s taxpayer tea parties are an expression of mass public anger against the political, media, and financial elites that believe they can and should tell ordinary Americans how to live their lives. Millions of people in thousands of locations will get together to send one unmistakable message to both political parties and elites of all stripes: enough. Enough taxes. Enough bailouts. Enough debt. Stop it. Just leave us alone.

Powerful elites are now increasingly concentrated on the left side of the political spectrum. Corporate rent-seekers, radical environmentalists with deep-pocketed foundation backers, well-heeled trial lawyers, taxpayer-funded so-called community groups, and unions that take dues directly from workers’ paychecks form the backbone of the so-called progressive movement and its associated so-called grassroots. Elites are very comfortable with the sort of top-down, politically correct, controlled grassroots on the left—after all, the marching orders and talking points come from their friends and allies.

Genuine, spontaneous grassroots, on the other hand, is scary to elites, especially the media elites who have almost completely ignored the tea party movement, attempting to silence potentially millions of Americans taking to the street. It’s a clear dereliction of their responsibility to report to news. The few mentions in the elite media, like Paul Krugman’s New York Times column, try to diminish and discredit the significance of millions of Americans speaking out.

Krugman, like many elites, tries to dismiss the genuine populist outrage by calling it fake, alleging that the grassroots is really made of AstroTurf, a front for corporate interests. It’s natural for elites to think this way, because it’s precisely how they and their friends operate. Put together a huge budget (see, for instance, Al Gore’s $300 million plus war chest to push radical energy tax hikes), hire an army of staffers, assemble a hierarchical structure, and push out the talking points and marching orders.

The tea parties are structured very differently. A general anti-tax, anti-debt, and anti-bailout rebellion doesn’t advance any special interests, so by its nature it can and is supported only by people with broader motivations. There is no single leader. This is a broad effort with thousands of citizens playing crucially important parts.

With Americans across the political spectrum steaming over the seemingly endless Wall Street bailouts, it’s a not-so-known fact that many of the bankers and financiers being paraded into Washington for public tongue lashings are, behind closed doors, supporters and friends of establishment politicians. Big money is opportunistic—it wants access and privileges, including access to the public fisc.

The populist backlash against elite looting of wealth via taxes, regulations, debt, and bailouts is real. The backlash over elites telling ordinary Americans how to live their lives through a media drumbeat, and forcing them to comply through laws and regulations is also real.

Tax dollars continue to enrich Washington bureaucrats and Wall Street bankers at the expense of ordinary Americans, with even higher taxes on the horizon. We are facing trillions in debt for out-of-control special interests spending at the expense of all the workers (and their children and grandchildren) who will have to pay it all back with interest.

If elected officials fail to change course, they may discover that the millions of Americans taking to the streets this week are also voters more than willing to vote them out of office. America is a constitutional democracy. We are ruled by the people, not the elites.

PS Taxes are taxes whether you call them income taxes or something else. There will obviously be taxes on all energy (cap and trade - $1 trillion +), to cover the defict, for universial health care, for ...........

I'll be there!!!

I'll be at the protest because it's an opportunity to let this foolish regime know just how destructive their policies are.

When we are 12trillion in debt in a few short years and inflation is rampant at least I'll be able to look back and say I stood with the few who weren't fooled by the mass media that's trying to sell us on this lightweight President.

Bike Rack you are truly a small town idiot.  This has nothing to do with race whatsoever yet you and your ilk want to tell others if they disagree with all the bile this admin is shoving down our nation's throat were racist.  He was elected by a bunch of ignorant people, half of whom, cant name one supreme court justice or even know who the VP is...they only jumped on the popular bandwagon.

Lockett:  Reagan's debt...our kids are still going to be paying it...huh?  Have another toke and go back to counting your pubic hairs.

Truth is the wealthy in this country already pay the majority of the taxes.  What is being sought by the followers of Obama is a country where all the have nots and do nothings feed from the tit of the productive few that choose to try and better themselves.

California should be a wake up call for all you brainless Obama lap dogs.  We can't pay our bills, costs are going up, foreclosures are everywhere, crime is rampant and meanwhile our do nothing legislature gives themselves raises while sending anything of any importance to the people to vote on.

tea party ADVOCATES OF THE FREE MARKET SYSTEM or WTO supporters

All these people are about is the support of the free market system... You know the one...Where all the products we use come from overseas and we buy them because they are so cheap. Conservatives in general may have some good ideas about some things but this isn't one of them. This is a basic Republican philosophy in that they expect the market system to completely support the country rather than the tax system. That would be totally awesome if it was the United States manufacturing base we were supporting. That philosophy would work. But it's not the United States Manufacturing base that "free market" supports.

I suggest anyone wanting to support this tax day look a little deeper before you jump right in. The World Trade Organization oversees the "free market" system through regulations that are killing economies around the world including ours. We live in a Global economy, there is no way around it to some extent. However The United States needs to remain viable on her own and as long as we blindly submit to the current free trade policies any country who manufactures product cheaper will be able to wipe us out. Just look at how fast China's export business took off and what it did for them. Look what it did to us...

Our country was 1st in the product research, design, and marketing (advertising) of almost every product we get from overseas so our costs to manufacture are higher because we have to pay for all that. All the other countries do basically is "steal" our "groundwork" and make an exact copy of what all our hard work produced and they import it to us. (same principle as black market only now they call it "free market"). I don't expect anyone to take my word for it. Check it for your self.  We all hate taxes. And we don't want our fat old government living on our taxes. These disinformation pushers are playing the party card (conservative/liberal) to draw away form the issue. All they have to do is say the word liberal and people won't look any further into it. These pushers will say that anyone who doesn't support the free market (free for all) is anti-constitution, anti-god-fearing, pro-abortion, pro-taxes, and a number of other things....That is a smokescreen people... if you buy into the deal just because you have a problem with taxes (we all have a problem with taxes) or they sold the program to you because they said the Liberals don't care about God. They are playing you....

Liberals do not want other countries dictating our economy and neither do conservatives. Please look at the whole picture. And don't let them lead you into the old propaganda song and dance. Conservatives and Liberals have many differing views but this free market fiasco led by the World Trade Organization WTO shouldn't be one of them. The World Trade Organization doesn't have their own country, they meet all around the world for their summit meetings, and do daily business in offices throughout the world, however they are more powerful than any one country. They don't have huge business lobbyists from just "their" county, the have huge business lobbyists from 20 countries. ( I don't know for sure how many countries are represented by the WTO now but it's easy to find out and I'll let you know) It's a lot.

And we shouldn't buy into the "this is about race" issue because that is just another disinformation smokescreen designed to have us look anywhere but where we should be.  Our country needs to support herself. We earned the right to. Our hard work and research went into products that we now have to buy from other countries who benefit from them because they get to sell them to us and all they have to do is manufacture the product using our blueprints........You have no idea how angry this makes me. Think legal black market ...when you think "free trade".  And if you don't think this is about free- trade then we are all screwed.....

glendle's picture

attention all tea party supporters... please

read my comment that I just posted...It's kind of important:)

glendle's picture

bummer..

I just looked and none of them are online now......

glendle's picture

I checked out Heatons 411 on tea party and

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

that web page stated specifically the truth about the tea party ( it was there but hard to find amongst all the smoke ) it referenced that " if you are a conservative for free trade you will stand up against wasteful liberal spending" then it went into the blah blah blah phase of party-carding (conservative/liberal)...I know that we have several different ideas about things, but no one wants to see us falling deeper into problems with our economy....and free trade needs to be fixed to allow us to stand on our own. We need to be strong again...Once that's fixed and fixed right our tax burden will go away and we will once again be the worlds best.

Tea Party

The Tea Party was about the Governments irresponsible spending of trillions of dollars by both Republicans and Democrats that we do not have in our coffers.

The "pork" spending on both sides is a spending contest. "outragous"!!

To me this is an American issue, not a party issue. Our Senators and Representitives Federal and State do not listen to the people anymore.

To me the Tea Party was a way to start comunicating the American People's dissatisfaction with the present circumstances.
