Closure of Lumber Mills in Tuolumne County & Beyond

The impact of closing lumber miils in towns such as Sonora and other Mother Lode Cities will be devastating.
The impact of 150 layoffs in Sonora during already a recession will impact our local and regional economy.

here in the NW
the new housing drop-off is hurting mills here as well. Unfortunately the lumber industry is prone to boom or bust cycles. One way to rectify that is to legalize hemp production (2/3 of all trees harvested in the NW are harvetsted for fiber, not lumber). Hemp is sustainable and out produces timber by at least a factor of 4X. Hemp would allow our forests to become sustainable and renewable and our forests could be managed for production of quality lumber through mature trees, not just producing pecker poles. Older forests provide more biomass - which produces more oxygen - and they do better at protecting our waterways from introduction of silt from erosion.
