Bakersfield, Day 2 (Semifinals and consolation fifth round)

Just saw Oliver Congleton of Beyer and Matt Galton of Downey walk in together. They're sitting in the same section, presumably to root for Oliver's brother Jake, who is warming up on mat 5. Kind of neat to see a couple of kids who had some really fierce matches against each other this year hanging out together.

And they're off! Congleton-Correa straight ahead, Egleston-Stevenson in the middle of the floor.

Correa takedown early and he's working a cradle. He's getting back points. Period over, it's Correa up 5-0.

Egleston scoreless late in the 1st.

Egleston takedown with :20 left in the 1st, he's up 2-0 after 1.

COngleton down 5-0 with 1:00 left in 2nd. Make that 7-0.

Egleston leads 2-0 going into the 3rd.

Congleton down 7-0 with 1:10 left. His opponent now wrestling pretty defensively.

Egleston getting back points with a tilt. He's up 7-0 with :30 left.

Congleton losst 9-1. Good season for the sophomore.

And Brandon Egleston wins 7-0, assuring himself a state medal. Big fist pump and points to his coaches.

About not making weight?  A real tragedy.

Nope, just traded messages with his coach. There were a handful of wrestlers who didn't make weight.

A guy up here on press row was telling me that part of the reason Klingsheim of Liberty went from 125s to 119s was so it would give another guy - their current 125 pounder - a better chance at going to state. Then they both made it and the 125 guy didn't make weight.

Just saw Hurtado of Sheldon pin a Poway kid at 112s, so he's getting a medal. And Poway loses, and the entire arena cheers.

Please let me know how Jake Briggs - Bella Vista does this round

Tate up 2-0 heading into the 2nd. Ferry up 2-0 midway through the 2nd.

Cody Tow across the way. Looks like he is up 9-3 in the 2nd.

Ferry up 2-0 heading into the 3rd, he rode Calcagno out in the 2nd.

Tate up 2-0 1:00 left in the 2nd.

And Tate is ridden out in the 2nd. He remains up 2-0 heading into the 3rd.

Ferry up 2-0 with 1:20 left in match. And it looks like Tow just won, so he's getting a medal.

Calcagno with a takedown in the last second, but it isn't enough and Ferry wins 3-2 for a state medal!

And the final whistle sounds on the Tate match as well. Tate wins 8-1 and also gets a medal. Three medals for the Sac-Joaquin Section at 125s.

Briggs across the arena. He's up 2-0 with :39 left in either the 2nd or 3rd. He;s on top and working a tilt.

And Briggs rides his guy out for a 2-0 win! He's getting a medal.

I see Tyler Johnson from Vacaville in front of me. He's 0-0 with 1:00 left in the 2nd.

They're about to start the semis so I'll be paying more attention there.

TJohnson reversed and he's down 2-0. And he just lost.

Any Vacaville fans out there? Can somebody tell me why one of the two center mats is the mat for the Vaca Pena Panthers? I looked up Vaca Pena and it appears to be a middle school in Vacaville. You'd think they'd use mats from the Bakersfield schools.

The other center mat is El Dorado, which I believe is also out of the Central Section.

The semifinal delay is because they're waiting on the last consolation match on one of the two center mats.

Sometimes when schools buy mats, they get a discount if they let them use them at a big tournament. They save shipping because the school brings them home after the tournament.

Ludwig lost 3-0 on three back points. And Stafford is 3-3 in OT.

Knoblauch up 2-0 heading into the thrid. Gayton on bottom to start.

And Jesse Stafford gets the takedown for a 5-3 victory and a state medal.

Moita on top and trying to tilt Cisneros but it's still 4-0 with 1:00 left in match.

1:00 left and Gaytan escape. Knoblauch leads 2-1. It's obvious these two wrestlers are familiar with each other.

Moita gets an armbar and tries to flip Cisneros, but he is saved by the bell and Cisneros wins 4-0.

Knoblauch circling. He knows Gaytan has to make a move. And Knoblauch holds him off! Knoblauch and his coaches point to the Clovis West section and celebrate.

Heading into the third: Cabanas up 1-0 but Zimmer starting on bottom. Delgado up 2-0 with 1:00 left. He's working an armbar.

Klingsheim reversal for 8-8 and Klingsheim gets back points, and victory by fall. David Klingsheim to the finals, but a great performance by Allen.

Garcia trails 8-3 with :51 left in the 2nd. He just got a takedown, but out of bounds.

Salinas with the reversal and he's up 10-3. Garcia's going to need to hit a throw or something. And there's the reversal and back points for Garcia!

GArcia trails 10-8 and ... three more back points! Garcia up 11-10. And now it's 11-all! Garcia on top.

Salinas reversal with :50 left and he leads 13-11. Wild match!
