CIF State Meet, Day 1, Quarterfinals

wdeboard's picture

We'll use this thread for the quarterfinals. A total of 18 Sac-Joaquin Section quarterfinalists, and nine from the Stanislaus District. Stanislaus District represent!

Coming up:
103: Jake Congleton (Beyer) vs. Alex Cisneros (Selma)
103: Brandon Egleston (Turlock) vs. Daniel Gaytan (Clovis)

Cisneros is ranked #1 in the state and has been for much of the season. Gaytan is another 103-pound freshman out of the Central Section.

I'm there.

Good for Dom.  He's committed to CSU Fullerton.

Hey Mac, when is Stanislaus

Hey Mac, when is Stanislaus State going to start a wrestling program? I'll donate the first $100!

Consolation just ending, then quarters to begin.

I may slow down at times, because I'll have to run to the other side of the arena to grab quotes from some of the kids.

Congleton and Cisneros stalking around on mat 9. Egleston and Gaytan on mat 3.

wdeboard's picture

And they're off! Cisneros

And they're off!

Cisneros and Gaytan both with early takedowns. They're up 2-0.

wdeboard's picture

And Cisneros wins by pin.

And Cisneros wins by pin. Ugh, he looked good. He kept a knee on the mat the entire time, stayed really low and took good shots.

Egleston down 2-0 heading into the 2nd period. And now Egleston down 4-0 early in the 2nd.

wdeboard's picture

And Fabian Garcia on mat 7.

And Fabian Garcia on mat 7. It's scoreless early.

Egleston down 4-0 heading into the third. He needs to hit a move.

And Garcia with takedown aand back points! It's 5-0 Fabian late in the 1st.

wdeboard's picture

Garcia's got ANOTHER chicken

Garcia's got ANOTHER chicken wing and torquing the shoulder.

Egleston down 6-1. Garcia up 7-0 in the 2nd.

How cool is this? I see a

How cool is this? I see a "sensenbaugh" on The Hive. COuld that be California wrestling hall of fame member Dean Sensenbaugh? If so, Hi Dean!

Gonzalez trying to throw Garcia, but he's just too quick. The one time he got a throw off, Garcia just rolled away from him. Too fast and too physical.

wdeboard's picture

Garcia with a lightning-fast

Garcia with a lightning-fast start and shoots a double leg and gets the takedown. Garcia looking impressive. He's dominating a very good wrestler in Gonzalez. Final: 10-1. Be right back.

ahhh brandon

Garcia told me he lost twice

Garcia told me he lost twice to Gonzalez at state last year. First in championship then again in consolation. But this is a different wrestler.

125s:
McAlester of Clovis is up on Oakdale's Shane Tate 7-0 in the third. McAlester bleeding.

CC's David Ferry trails Gilroy's Martin Gonzalez 2-0 in the second. Ferry on top and riding. I believe Gonzalez is #1 in the state.

wdeboard's picture

Terry Allen of Hogan to the

Terry Allen of Hogan to the semis as well! He's got Klingsheim, though.

wdeboard's picture

Fabian Garcia vs. Steven

Fabian Garcia vs. Steven Salinas (Northview) in tomorrow's semi. Salinas trailed AJ Valles (Selma) 5-0 in the first before rallying.

McAlester up 8-3 on Tate, but using more blood time.
Ferry trails Gonzalez 3-1 in the 3rd, :45 left.

wdeboard's picture

Ferry shoots a single, but

Ferry shoots a single, but Gonzalez scrambles off the mat. And Gonzalez wins 3-1.

McAlester also beat Tate, but I didn't see the final score.

I've broached the subject

I've broached the subject with Dr. Shirvani and I mention it to Milt Richards every chance I get.  Pony up the money and there is probably a spot in that new rec center big enough for a couple of mats.  Title nine is no barrier in this sport.

Please follow Matt!

Galton 130

wdeboard's picture

Matt Galton caught and

Matt Galton caught and pinned. Too bad. That brings coach Tony Ippolito's career to an end. 24 years of great success by coach Ippolito.

wdeboard's picture

Snell from Poway just pinned

Snell from Poway just pinned Young from Healdsburg at 135s. The Poway folks cheer; and nobody else does.

Windsor's Cody Howe and Selma's Jose Mendoza in 2OT. And Mendoza wins! Howe's first loss this season.

wdeboard's picture

If Stefy's still here, Mazza

If Stefy's still here, Mazza just got knocked out.

Usually they all jump to their feet and block everyone's

view too.

Thanks Will!

I'd rather be THERE rooting on Ripon's Mackey, but this is great!

Lazaro and Briggs

Any news on the BV wrestlers left in the brackets?  Thanks Will.

In conso 130s, Bakersfield

In conso 130s, Bakersfield just beat Buchanan and the Bako fans go nuts. Buchanan kid throws his headgear. Watch out; you're in a team title race!

Hi Stephanie. Funny story

Hi Stephanie. Funny story about Ryan Mackey. His sophomore year there was a story rolling around that he missed his team's practice on Valentine's Day to take his mom to a show in San Francisco. He told me the truth earlier this year and his mom confirmed it: It was Ryan and his girlfriend and Ryan's mom and her husband.

He's got the seventh-place finisher in the Central Section in his quarterfinal, so he has a chance!

wdeboard's picture

Doc: Lazaro and Briggs still

Doc: Lazaro and Briggs still in conso. Briggs on to tomorrow, not sure if Lazaro won. Burkhalter out and I'm not sure what Pfau did.

Where do you get these nuggets?

Good Stuff!

wdeboard's picture

Kyle West just lost in

Kyle West just lost in consolation. He's out. I would not have predicted that after seeing him earlier this year. But he had problems when he moved up to 140 pounds; the section is an extremely tough weight class at 40s.

wdeboard's picture

Yiokes, we're in 152s! TJ

Yiokes, we're in 152s!

TJ Belton just beat Bryce Hammond of Bako 4-0 and the booes rain down.

I don't see Urquizo.

Do you think the boos were against Belton, or due to Hammond

 or due to Hammond losing?

Jake Congleton

Hey Will,

has Jake Congleton 103's wrestled Cisneros from Selma yet.

Congleton got pinned

by Cisneros.  See above.

wdeboard's picture

Urquizo won. Had to grab

Urquizo won. Had to grab quotes and I missed Mackey! WIll get you an update.

wdeboard's picture

Hammond gto called for two

Hammond gto called for two illegal moves. The Bako coach argued and the booes came. Tough to tell if they were because Bako was dinged or because Bako was protesting. They came from the other side of the arena from the Bako folks, though.

wdeboard's picture

I was told that Mackey lost.

I was told that Mackey lost. Not sure of the score.

And Galas' matchn just finished. He was down 2-0 then it was over. I'm trying to catch up on that one too.

wdeboard's picture

Galas lost. I've got to

Galas lost. I've got to write, but check back around 10-10:30 and I promise more feeback and analysis.

Nick Rohrer- Oak Ridge

Hey Will, can you tell me what happened in Rohrer's quarter finalmatch?

On my way

On my way to the Palace now.... gonna catch the opening act.

I love Bako!

Did you know?

Great story Will! Did you know Ryan just joined our Board of Directors for RCAF's synthetic track & field project? His mom is on our advisory committee as well. We also voted Nick Hardenbrook on board. :-)
