The quote that got away

In talking Wednesday with Rodney Carpenter, who ran the YMCA from Modesto from 1982 until 1987, I asked him about the current Y leadership's failure to provide an annual audit over the past three years.

Carpenter, who spent most of his professional life running non-profits, said audits are vital to the organization's existence.  Did any non-profit he ever headed fail to complete an annual audit?

"Oh, God no!" he said.

If only Rodney Carpenter had been here instead of Steve Smith we

would be a lot better off.  At least there wouldn't have been, what has been described by some, as a  cover-up.  And then Tom Ciccarelli and others, so I've been told on the grapevine, wouldn't be running around looking for someone to blame.

I wonder how many local non-profits...

Have failed to have an annual audit....

Well we know

that one in particular isn't compliant with their use permit... The United Samaritans Foundation for one. I wonder how many more there are county wide?

Stanford4Modesto's picture

Is that the way that it stands now?

They did not come into compliance since they were raked across the coals at the Turlock City Council?

Also, what does that have to do with a financial audit - are you now accusing them of pilfering money, Linda?

Nope.

Just made an observation. But, hey, how about that audit for USF?
Stanford4Modesto's picture

Why go after them?

Why don't you go after some organizations that may have taken advantage of the poor?

I could name two of them that worry me....

Non-profits are supposed to do an audit once a year.

Why don't you check into that for us linda?

Check all the non-profits in the county and make a list of who has and hasn't.

give her something realistic to do....

Check out where El Concilio's money came from - since they are an affiliate of NCLR - I am sure your boyfriend would be more than eager to help you - you could start by asking two questions:

1. What organization paid the rent of their current location (before the mortgage meltdown)

2. What was Mike Zagaris doing on their board of Directors in 2006? (before the morgage meltdown)

She won't even be able to do that - smoke and mirrors - not even that - it's too easy - just another stumbling block to the path of improvement.

Mismanagement

It seems like anything that goes bankrupt - whether it is mortgage companies, banks, or non-profits, can always be shown to have mismanagement.  Unfortunately, money is not grown on trees.

Pastel...

So, I take it that you are down with annual audits?

Which post was this in response to?

I'm not down with audits

But the YMCA is selling the building....  and going bankrupt too.  I said the reason is mismanagement, and you wonder why there was no audit for three years?

But at least with an audit you can identify exactly what happen

to the money and when it all started to go south.

What's more -

Divert the collision - keep the organization on track - generally, when audits are missing from solvent organizations, it generally means that there is something shady going on -

But then again - if I recall correctly this is merely a branch of the National YMCA and when we say THE YMCA is going bankrupt - that may be a misnomer.

when your low on your dough, it's a good place to go...
