Editors Desk: About this blog

The Editor's Desk is the blog by three of the top editors at The Bee -- Mark Vasche, Dan Day and Dave Lyghtle -- in which they discuss a wide range of topics and media coverage of those topics. The blog is a good source of information about The Bee, modbee.com and other Bee publications and Web sites. It is designed as a vehicle for the editors to inform and interact with readers in an informal yet respectful manner. For links to more information about the editors, please turn to to our profile page.

Editors Desk: Story comment maintenance scheduled for Sunday evening

Attention, Hive bloggers. The system that allows public comment on our stories and editorials on modbee.com will be undergoing some maintenance late Sunday night. There may be a few short stretches where commenting will be disabled. This work will not affect the Hive.

Editors Desk: System problems on modbee.com

Folks: I don't believe the Hive has been affected, but we've had some annoying problems throughout the McClatchy network today that have disrupted service on modbee.com and other sites. Our corporate techs are working diligently, restarting servers and such to put things right.

UPDATE: All systems have been restored. If you experienced prolbems loggin in, we apologize. There was a power failure early in the morning that knocked out some corporate servers, and other servers encountered problems later on and were balky when our techs tried to restart them.

Editors Desk: Right on cue, the ignorant and intolerant respond

Friday afternoons in the newsroom are more complicated than other days because we're focused not only on the next day's paper, but the Sunday and Monday editions as well. I was talking late yesterday afternoon with one of the other senior editors, and we noted what we expected once today's lead story on the interview with a U.S. Navy veteran who is a Muslim was posted on modbee.com -- another outburst of intolerant and bigoted comments. The usual suspects have not failed to deliver.

"What a load of crap," reads a comment from Modesto_News. "Why does the Modesto Bee go to such lengths to try and convince us that Islam is not bad!" writes lawman. From Liekko: "Mod Bee, stop making excuses for radical Islam."

Editors Desk: A reminder - and warning - on Hive behavior

A few weeks ago we stated unequivocally that anyone linking to court records on other bloggers on The Hive would be suspended. That policy still stands. Such attacks are violations of the code of conduct for The Hive and modbee.com.

Editors Desk: Blog categories

As most bloggers here know, you can pick several categories in which to post your entries. We occasionally encounter posts in which someone puts his or her blog entry in every single category available. That's bad form. Please don't do it.

If you want to select multiple categories for your post, that's perfectly fine. Use a ctrl-click on your keyboard to select those categories. But under no circumstances should, for example, posts about NFL teams be categorized as women's issues, unless you're writing about the Raiders and NOW.

Editors Desk: We're back up

It seems our newfangled spam controls ran amok and blocked everyone from posting. I apologize. That shouldn't have happened.

You should have clear sailing through the weekend.
