Editors Desk: A warning on off-topic replies

Submitted by Editors_Desk on May 9, 2011 - 12:39pm.

We just removed several replies that we're way, way off the topic of the "Big Daddy" blog.

A few people seem to think that The Bee was not serious when we eliminated unlimted blogging on this site.

We were quite serious and we have no intention of reverting to the prior system.

The only bloggers here are Bee staff.

While we encourage readers to reply to our staff blogs, we insist that they stay on topic.

Those who refuse to cooperate will be banned.

Bloggers: Because of spam attacks in the last 24 hours, we've throttled up the spam protection on the site. We'll be fiddling with the settings to make sure our legitimate users can comment while the spammers are blocked.

We've heard from several people that our spam-blocking software is keeping you from posting. We apologize. That's not supposed to be happening.

We have a request into our developers to trouble-shoot the problem.

If it makes you feel any better, one of our top editors was blocked from posting. (Sorry, Dave!)

Editors Desk: Me and Prince William, back in the day

I didn't wake in the middle of the night to catch the royal wedding, but upon arising at my normal time this morning I did quite a bit of manipulation of the stories on modbee.com to feature the wire service coverage we have available of the big event.

As I watched video of the couple taking their vows, I heard the minister address the prince by his full name of "William Arthur Phillip Louis." That triggered a memory of a story I did as a rookie newsman with The Associated Press when William was born in 1982.

The first initials of the prince's names are W-A-P-L, an exact match with radio station WAPL in Appleton, Wis. Working in the Milwaukee bureau, I spoke most days with the news director at WAPL, Ray Waiter. When the prince was named, the station hit upon a brilliant idea: send a package of gifts to the future king.
