Editors Desk: An apology on behalf of the media elite

Here's a sharply written piece by Roger Simon on Politico about media coverage of the Republican convention under way in Minneapolis. There are some juicy rejoinders in the comments below Simon's column, too.

Our McClatchy correspondents are filing furiously from this final day of the convention. You'll find their stories at mcclatchydc.com. Their "Hot Off the Trail" blog is also worth a look.

Google has launched a new browser called "Chrome." Here's a screen shot.

We've been checking it out, and it seems to work fine for displaying The Hive and modbee.com. If you'd like to download the browser, here's the link.

Editors Desk: Video update

If you are a regular viewer of videos on modbee.com, you may have noticed over the last few days that we haven't been posting them as frequently as we normally do. That's because much of our multimedia staff has been working hard to put together a nifty project that will appear in print and online in mid-September.

We have a few other tricks up our multimedia sleeves that we hope to roll out over the next few weeks.

And one more thing: if you haven't already given it a go, try our new online games section. It contains some wonderful executive time-wasters. ;)

We've received several complaints in recent days about personal attacks and other bad behavior on the site. This note is to let you know that we are reviewing matters and will be dealing with them on a case by case basis.

If you use an RSS reader to subscribe to news and blog feeds, I encourage you to check out the directory of modbee feeds at www.modbee.com/rss.

If you want a basic understanding of how RSS feeds work -- they really are remarkable -- check out this quick video.

Editors Desk: Searching tip for modbee.com

Here's an insider tip to help you search more efficiently for stories and other content on modbee.com. Using the search box at the top right corner of the site, enter the term you seek in quotation marks.

For example, type "bloodthirsty pirates" rather than those words without the quotation marks. With the quotation marks, the search engine seeks out the exact phrase. Without them, it searches for each word, returning many more results.

The quotation marks will save you a lot of aggravation.

Our search engine is due for an upgrade this year, by the way. We don't have a launch date, however.

Editors Desk: All hail Modesto's Olympians

The news is just in from Beijing: Erin Cafaro of Modesto and her teammates on the U.S. Women's 8 have won the gold medal. The Dutch took the silver, edging out the three-time defending champions, Romania.

We're able to bring you exceptional coverage from Beijing, thanks to Mark Maloney of our McClatchy sister paper in Lexington, Ky., and to the photographers of the Associated Press. Mark and the AP shooters were on seen to capture all the details.

UPDATE - I just linked the NBC Olympics coverage of the race to the story. There's an 11-minute raw video of the race, although you may have to download a Microsoft plug-in to view it. I had to, and it only took a minute. Well worth viewing.
