Philosophy of Cannibalistic Unmensch
Submitted by slice_o_logic on Mon, 2009-11-16 10:54.There seems to be a disturbing trend of thought in America that, though it existed throughout history, is now accelerating at an unbelievable pace -- that which is adopted by the greedy, spiteful, non-thinkers. These people do not value man's greatest asset: his mind. These are the people who claim that the laborer "built" the greatness that exists in our country. Like a mule pulling a plow that tells the farmer "Look at the wheat I've grown for you!" the construction worker tells the architect "Look at the building I've created for you!" They do not think of the physicist who discovered how, using his mind, to create the microchips or transistors used in everyday life. They do not value the mathematician who finds a way to more efficiently generate electrical power, or the chemist who isolates compounds that he discovers is useful in medicine. The engineer who invents a machine to save countless hours of labor is not respected. The banker wh
Sad state of police force
Submitted by slice_o_logic on Mon, 2009-11-09 13:25.There are many people writing about the current sheriff debacle, but what I want to know is how to get a better class of humankind in the law enforcement field. Unfortunately, the vast majority of officers I have met do not impress me in the least. When I think about everyone I knew who wanted to join the police force, I must admit that I was not struck by any ability to critically think. I did not even find in them the virtue of consideration for others. They were, however, very eager to take down "bad guys" and teach them a lesson.
Gay marriage: Did I get your attention?
Submitted by slice_o_logic on Fri, 2009-11-06 09:44.I have heard ideas by a few with similar thoughts to my own on this subject, but not many. I think that the government should not differentiate between married or unmarried at all. That being said, I do believe that the relationship of marriage has always been between a man and a woman (or women). The english language is constantly changing, so the word marriage is often used in other ways, and I don't really care if two people of the same gender want to engage in a relationship and call it a "marriage". It seems to me that the extremes of pro or anti-gay marriage are loud, but do not give compelling arguments to support their position regarding law-making.
How should taxes be collected?
Submitted by slice_o_logic on Thu, 2009-11-05 08:39.In my last blog, a commenter noted that Jefferson endorsed the idea of taxing companies rather than individuals, and I figured I'd try to get a separate thread flowing for this topic. I have not encountered true anarchists who would rather have no government at all, though I imagine there are some, so the question here is how to pay for the governance we want.
Real health care reform needed, but not what Congress is proposing
Submitted by slice_o_logic on Wed, 2009-11-04 12:11.I have a question for all those who think that the health care industry is taking advantage of Americans and earning too much money. Why don't you start your own company that takes in lower profits and charges less for its services? Surely your company would become wildly popular and successful! Of course this is the most regulated field in the US, so the free market does not really have a chance to work. Without as much government interference this industry could make great strides toward remaining successful by satisfying its customers desires.
