Heat dangers -- no repeat of 2006

One of the horrific things about the summer of 2006 was that it took us, as a community, too long to figure out how many people were at risk from the prolonged, extreme heat. The result was that a number of people died.

It's obvious that we've learned a lesson and it's being applied this July. Cooling centers were opened almost immediately in Modesto and other communities. Officials urged people to check on their elderly and infirm neighbors. I called one of my neighbors; fortunately their air conditioning is working just fine but they appreciated the call.

We all look forward to relief from the heat and the haze. Let's hope we do not lose any of our neighbors because we didn't pay enough attention in 2008!

Good advice.

Check on them often.

Another Thing to Do

Check your storage areas for old portable fans.  If they are still working well, clean them up, and give them to the elderly and ill that you know. If their A/C goes down, especially on the week-ends, perhaps they can get by with the fan until it's repaired.  Also continue to check on them.  I did this one year.  In fact, I keep a number of them on hand, myself, just in case.
