My expanding vocabulary

My vocabulary expanded by one word today: manikin.

When I saw our story about "manikins" used in a nursing program, I went straight to the dictionary. I've always spelled the word "mannequin," and I was surprised to see what I thought was a rogue spelling.

But Webster's and dictionary.com set me straight. "Manikin" is a synonym for "mannequin," and it also has a specific meaning that "mannequin" does not: a body form used for anatomical or scientific purposes.

If I ever have to take the SATs again, I'll be ready.
